Come hack with me

Greetings GRefugees! It's been great to see the influx of so many new folks.

I just want to extend an invitation for our new arrivals to check out one of my favorite groups, Hacking LibraryThing. This is a place where regular LT members create little "hacks" to the LT experience. These addons are used by installing addons to your browser (usually Greasemonkey/TamperMonkey but sometimes Stylish) and then adding the individual script or style.

If that sounds complicated, it's really not in practice. And the folks in the group will be happy to help smooth over any rough patches for you.

There's also a wiki page to help pull all the various projects together as well as links to tell you go to install the browser addons needed:

http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Hacking_LibraryThing

Hope this helps people who are a little frustrated by some limitations in LT's design and features. Suggestions for hacks are always welcome.

Take care.

Thanks for the invite! I will join, but I may be vewy vewy quiet for a little while, because my brain may be approaching its event horizon for new stuff right now.

Oh, I've mostly hit the wall. It will be a little while before I download a new browser (is that possible on a Kindle Fire?) and play with scripts. However, I feel like it could open up the site to my needs.

#4 by @Shushelle> Sorry, but the support for this kind of stuff on mobile devices is almost non-existent. There's one way to do Greasemonkey scripts, but I don't really suggest it. And to use Stylish scripts, you have to manually download Firefox (its not in the amazon apps tore) and it's probably not going to be a browser you like as much.

And blah blah blah. For mobile, I just think it's all probably too much of a hassle unless you are a technoweenie and are used to jumping through a lot of hoops because you like that sort of thing. Sorry. :(

Oh, don't be sorry. That is very helpful. It saves me a ton of research, trial and what sounds to be much error. I could play with it on my computer but these days, it is easiest for me to jump on the Fire. I figured it might be an absolute pain to try something fun on the Fire.

Thank you!

#6 by @Shushelle> Anytime. And my scripts help even more if you REALLY get the LT OCD shakes and start spending a lot of time separating and combining and cleaning up stuff. If you ever do that, you'll probably shift back to a desktop/laptop for it. :D

I can just imagine they do help very much in that instance. I was almost there and became discouraged when my easy fixes just decided to not stay saved. I will get back to it eventually. I have a vintage collection that needs to be logged but I feel a break is needed.

#8 by @Shushelle> And to be honest, LT is not that great on mobile devices. They just haven't put a lot of time into it, what with the smaller development staff. It's certainly very usable, but there's just some things that don't work, like being able to edit your catalog entries by double-clicking on cells in the grid view or being able to drag sections on the work page up and down. And sometimes the little popup boxes come up off the bottom of the screen so it's confusing and you have to remember to scroll down to find it. Just some things for you to know so you're on guard for them later.

Thanks! I have run into a few of those, already. When I began tweaking my library, I did move to my desktop. I am not a fan of doing things twice unless it is necessary or desired.

Thanks, brightcopy.

My own participation has lagged--distracted by "real" life.

But I've joined the group.
