If you had a bookstore with limited space and couldn't spare room for a dedicated Horror section, where would you put the V.C. Andrews books?  Mystery, Sci-Fi/Fantasy (always lumped together; not my fault), or General Fiction?  I'm pushing for Mystery, but I don't know the books well enough.

I think I saw them in several places in the young adult romances section, with other works on the "darker" or "edgier" end of it.

Dear heavens, don't put them in YA. Incest, torture, rape, abuse - all are themes in these books. I'd put them under horror.

Why can't you have a dedicated horror shelf(ves)? If you are going to fit the books on your shelves anyway they are still going to take up the same amount of room no matter how you classify them.

4:  We only have room for what will sell, and most Horror boils down to SciFi/Fantasy or Mystery.  We put psychological thrillers in with the mysteries, and I've pulled Andrews from our YA section.

Well, the first book is about four siblings locked in an attic for years and starved and poisoned by their relatives. The two older kids fall in love and have sex. One kid dies. Another kid is stunted by the poison. The books just get worse from there. It's certainly not a mystery or SF/F, so I'd have to say general fiction just by process of elimination.

Of your choices available, I'd go with Mystery.

General fiction, honestly. I'm 99% sure that's where they were shelved when they came out. They really started their own mini-mini-sub-genre -- children in dark peril..... Say what you will, but Flowers in the Attic was quite original when it came out.

I'd go with General Fiction.
