I picked it up a long while back, and read the first 4 or so. I was very impressed. It reminded me of those old-fashioned magazine serials for boys, very episodic, very tight focus on the main characters. I especially liked the very clear but not-too-preachy emphasis on there being different standards of "manhood" and many of them do not involve beating things to a paste in battle.

Who is the author, and what is the first book in the series?

John Flanagan
First book is The Ruins of Gorlan and that series is planned to be finished at 12 books sometime in the fall of this year depending on what country you live in.
There is a companion trilogy called Brotherband, dealing with (essentially) Viking-esque raiders/pirates in that same created world. The two are supposed to complement each other, but have entirely different casts, so that it isn't necessary to read one before the other, or even both at all. I have not read any of those yet, but the first of them is called The Outcasts .

Good! I thought I was the only one who read it! I'm only on the third book though.... :(

The Brotherband series looks pretty cool! I can't wait to read it!!!

Hmmm.... sounds interesting... may have to add that to the tbr...

My son was into those a few years back and thoroughly enjoyed them. It was also nice to see an adventure series with not a lot of magic in it. (Trust me, I love a good wizard, but it seems like there can't be any action/adventure book anymore without throwing magic into it.) There are at least 8 of these books stashed around the house. Now we're trying to figure out where he stashed the Temeraire series--hmm.

My son has been re-reading the series this summer. He's on the 7th book and enjoying them as much as the first time. He's been encouraging me to read them as well, and I plan to. I just have a few others closer to the top of the TBR pile to read first.

I love it! I admit I get a little obsessed, so I've read the whole series and the Brotherband books. Such a fan of Flanagan.

How is the Brotheband series? I also love Flanagan!!!

It is a lot of fun. It's about a group of boys training in Skandia. One of the boys is half Skandian, half Araluen.

I find it interesting that (at least in the US) these books are shelved with the middle grade fiction, despite the fact that after the first four books Will and his friends are in their late teens to early twenties. I am incredibly excited about the book coming out in November; I also thought the series was completed so knowing there's another book in the wings just has me super happy.
As for the Brotherband Chronicles, I have yet to read beyond the first one, but I enjoyed what I've read so far.

I love this series. I have reread it twice and have tried to convince my team I teach with to use it in classes.
