1joannasephine
Welcome to the brand new Pratchett Quote Game thread! A mildly tricky one to start us off:
For the first time in her life, she knew what it was like to have balconies.

2Helenliz
That's a witch, she's off borrowing.
Wyrd Sisters maybe
Wyrd Sisters maybe
3joannasephine
Sort of on the right track, but not the right book.
4pinkozcat
Sounds more like Witches Abroad
5joannasephine
Again, right track but wrong book.
7joannasephine
Still no.
;-)
;-)
11joannasephine
No, no and still no.
13joannasephine
Yes indeedy! Your turn, Minnie.
14pinkozcat
The fact that one of them seemed a little unclear as to what his business actually consisted of was quite unnoticed in the turmoil.
15Beorn_se_Bacaire
Err--Pyramids?
22pinkozcat
Another Hint
From: that was the most important factor in any mindless escape. You were running from.
To could look after itself.

25pinkozcat
Interesting Times is the book. All yours, Joanna
26joannasephine
Kicking myself for not getting it earlier.
Ok:
It is essential that the proper use of three wishes should bring happiness to the greatest available number of people
Ok:
It is essential that the proper use of three wishes should bring happiness to the greatest available number of people
27Beorn_se_Bacaire
Hmmm--The Light Fantasic? I seem to recall a genie in there...
29pinkozcat
It has to be Witches Abroad?
30joannasephine
No ...
33Beorn_se_Bacaire
Let's try Sourcery...
34joannasephine
Still no … hint needed?
35joannasephine
I’ll take that as a yes.
Ok, an extended version of the quote:
It is essential that the proper use of three wishes should bring happiness to the greatest available number of people, and this is what in fact had happened.
The — were happy. When no amount of worshipping caused — to come back and trample their enemies they poisoned all their priests and tried enlightened atheism instead,

37joannasephine
Yep. Take it away Helenliz!
38Helenliz
It was this dynamic interplay of power blocs that made Ankh-Morpork such an interesting, stimulating and above all bloody dangerous place to live
41Beorn_se_Bacaire
Just to get it going again...
Going Postal?
Going Postal?
50pinkozcat
Reaper Man? That is fairly rural
52pinkozcat
Random book; random page. This might be too easy but we need to lure people back to this thread.
Maybe you should loosen her clothing or something,' said Gaspode. 'It's just a thought,' he added. 'You don't have to glare at me like that. I'm a dog, what do I know?

I was just thinking, I don't often add a post to this thread But (and I know you were waiting for the 'but') but I don't think this thread will die very soon! We might have a hiatus, hey we "all get a bit weary" And this reminded me of song
I wonder if this is now thought of as a 'sexist'? Don't care, I still like it.
Guido.

Guido.
54pinkozcat
Guido, everything seems to be sexist these days so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Maybe after the election things will revert to normal when the Press take a rest from politics.
Care to have a guess as to which book the quote came from? :)

55guido47
Thanks Pinko, I would have to suggest some sort of 'description book' rather than one of the canon. I'm looking at The folklore of discworld at the moment, but can't find any appropriate quote.
So that's it :-)
G.
So that's it :-)

59ronincats
Moving Pictures, since it is the first Gaspode book?
60pinkozcat
Moving Pictures is correct. Over to you ronincats
61ronincats
"They thought you could see life through books but you couldn't, the reason being that the words got in the way."
65Helenliz
Reaper Man?
I'm thinking it sounds like Windle Poons, but am probably entirely wrong (as usual)

69edrandrew
Small Gods perhaps.
78pinkozcat
Reverting to my default reply. Unseen Academicals
85Beorn_se_Bacaire
To continue, Sourcery?
93ronincats
Pyramids. Maskerade, and Feet of Clay are too early; The Truth is too late! That certainly limits the selection!
94pinkozcat
Default #2 The Last Continent?
100ronincats
Carpe Jugulum is it! Nanny Ogg is reflecting that Agnes read books.
101pinkozcat
What were your other two possibilities, ronincats?
I'll post a new quote when I have finished hanging out the washing. :)
I'll post a new quote when I have finished hanging out the washing. :)
102pinkozcat
'A miracle!' he said, waving his hands dramatically. 'The time of miracles is at hand!'
103joannasephine
Moist, having prayed to Anoia? Going Postal?
104pinkozcat
Sorry - not Going Postal
105ronincats
>101 pinkozcat: The Fifth Elephant and The Science of Discworld were the other two I was thinking of.
106pinkozcat
The Fifth Elephant was going to be my next guess but I don't do the Science of the Discworld series.
108pinkozcat
Yes - Small Gods is correct. Your turn, Helenliz
110Helenliz
OK, here goes:
"After all, there's a Tooth Fairy, ain' there? You might as well wonder why we have a God of Wine and not a God of Hangovers - "
"After all, there's a Tooth Fairy, ain' there? You might as well wonder why we have a God of Wine and not a God of Hangovers - "
113pinkozcat
It sounds like one of the witches and I've read it somewhere recently but I won't go any further than that. I've had more than my share lately; just needed to get the obvious one out of the way.
115pinkozcat
Oh, dear! I didn't mean to get it. I'll try to find a nice easy one. Hmmmm random book; random page. I must read this book again.
I DIDN'T QUITE FOLLOW THAT. TELL ME ABOUT PSYCHIC BIDS AGAIN. I THOUGHT I WAS GETTING THE HANG OF THAT.
I DIDN'T QUITE FOLLOW THAT. TELL ME ABOUT PSYCHIC BIDS AGAIN. I THOUGHT I WAS GETTING THE HANG OF THAT.
118pinkozcat
Light Fantastic is correct. Over to you Helenliz. And yes, you are right about the circumstances.
119Helenliz
Ok, try this one:
"She was said to bathe in the blood of up to two hundred virgins at a time"
"She was said to bathe in the blood of up to two hundred virgins at a time"
122Beorn_se_Bacaire
Can't be Carpe Jugulum can it?
124Beorn_se_Bacaire
Hmm--didn't really think it was the true vampire novel.
Drats--I'm going to be gone this weekend. Somebody else will have to take my turn, just in case.

127Beorn_se_Bacaire
Okay, fine. I'm home now... Let's go random.
The barman pulled a heavy hickory stick from its hiding place under the bar. "Arms? Legs? Suit yourself," he said.

129Beorn_se_Bacaire
Incorrect.
131joannasephine
Or is it Fred settling up the bar bill after Nobby's enoblement? Feet of Clay?
132Beorn_se_Bacaire
Right on the spot, Joannasephine. Over to you.
133joannasephine
Yippee! Ok, probably too easy, but what the heck:
“I don’t see why I should have to go around biting my wife after thirty years of marriage, and that’s flat,” said ––.
“I don’t see why I should have to go around biting my wife after thirty years of marriage, and that’s flat,” said ––.
135joannasephine
No, not Carpe Jugulum.
136Helenliz
Oh, isn't that Arthur, the grocer turned Vampire? Let's try Guards Guards?
137joannasephine
Oooh, so close. Not Guards! Guards! though.
138ronincats
Well, that makes Men at Arms the next logical choice then.
140joannasephine
No and still no, and getting colder.
141joannasephine
A hint: Helenliz was right about the who, wrong about the where ...
142Beorn_se_Bacaire
I know--I just can't think which book!
Doesn't he show up in The Truth?
Doesn't he show up in The Truth?
143joannasephine
Yes, he does show up in The Truth, but it's not where this quote is from. Think of the first time we encounter him.
145joannasephine
Close, but no cylindrical smoking thing.
147joannasephine
No ... another hint needed?
149joannasephine
That's the one! Your turn, Helenliz.
153pinkozcat
I have read it somewhere fairly recently but can't think where. I have just re-read The Colour of Magic so maybe ...
158Beorn_se_Bacaire
Hogfather? I'm thinking it's Susan discussing the drawbacks of reincarnation. I could be imagining it, though.
159pinkozcat
I thought that it could be someone discussing the drawbacks of reincarnation with DEATH but I could be wrong too.
163pinkozcat
It was a fairly strong hint which you gave us, Helenliz.
Try this one:
She spoke sadly, as one might talk about an elderly relative who'd taken to wearing her underwear outside her clothes.

164Nahkis
Well, just to get things going, how's Witches Abroad for a guess?
167Nahkis
"By law and tradition the great Library of Unseen University is open to the public, although they aren't allowed as far as the magical shelves."
177Helenliz
oops. serves me right for nipping onto t'interweb while at work!
Unseen Academicals as a wild guess.

178Beorn_se_Bacaire
Eric?
I'm really guessing here...
I'm really guessing here...
189pinkozcat
#182 Re. hints ... You said that either Joannasephine or myself was getting closer. Perhaps if you told us all which one you were referring to it might put us on the right track.
190Nahkis
Oh, right, pinkozcat, thanks for reminding! The book in question is earlier than guess #180, but later than guess #181.
193Helenliz
So I was wrong in my feeling it was an early book. But I can hardly claim much credit, the clue in 190 only gave 2 to choose from!
Let's go with "When Mister Safety Catch is not on, Mister Crossbow is not your friend".
Let's go with "When Mister Safety Catch is not on, Mister Crossbow is not your friend".
199justjim
I'll have a go! Also "Yaharrrrr!*"
Without verticality, wisely the cochineal emperor goes forth at teatime; at evening the mollusk is silent among the almond blossom.
*not a hint, just a nod to Talk Like a Pirate Day

I was hoping somebody else would jump in here.
I just recently read this. It is Death (sneaky of Helenliz to avoid the ALL CAPS) talking with Mss Weatherwax in a barn. Granny, of course, blows out the candle.
Maskerade?

204Helenliz
yes, that's the one.
I know missing THE CAPS was sneaky, but no point making them too easy >;-)
