So-called teen books have actually come of age and are now appealing more and more to adults. This is especially true for many of the science fiction books written for teens such as Insignia. Many adult writers, Bacigalupi, Weber, Aguirre, Hickham, etc. have now entered the teen market and find it very rewarding. The books are fast-paced and explore a vast array of ideas and situations.

Insignia

Tom is a teenager who drifts from place to place with his gambling addicted father. He is so busy trying to get money for rent and food, that he often doesn't attend virtual school. The one thing he is really good at is virtual reality games and that is how he makes his money by betting against other players. In this future world a virtual war has been waging for decades and great virtual players are needed. The U.S. military wants Tom to join the virtual warriors military academy. It is like a godsend to Tom and he doesn't stop to consider anything else, even though his loser father doesn't want him to go to the academy. When Tom gets to the academy he learns that life is very different for a potential virtual warrior.

Comments: This is a very fast-paced read and Tom is always getting into all kinds of situations, due to his abilities, his street-wise instincts and his temperament. I highly recommend this book and its sequel Vortex to sci-fi readers of all ages. The intrigue, action, moral dilemmas and characters keep you reading into the wee hours of the morning.

I hope other folks will read the book and add their comments to this post.
