This month, Nova Peris, an Olympic athlete, has become the first indigenous Australian woman to serve in Parliament.

She is only the fourth Aboriginal parliamentarian. The first, Neville Bonner, was elected in 1972 to the first of four terms in the Senate, as a Liberal (which is the major conservative party in Australia). Nova Peris is Labor.
Peris was installed in the Senate in January by then-Prime Minister Julia Gillard, in a move criticized even within her own party as tokenism, or as a paternalistic gesture seeking to placate indigenous people with a celebrity athlete. The election this month confirmed Peris in the seat.
