I didn't make many notes on this book because it wasn't necessarily noteworthy. It wasn't slow or anything either, it was just the life of a man and things happened and life went on and he found his way around his feelings and whatnot. It was creative in its own way and I don't regret reading it, but I remember thinking I wasn't at all sure how I felt about it.
The first chapter was heartbreaking and some of the book was very hard to read as an animal lover.
With all the diversion, there were periods when Sonalal almost forgot why he'd sought the magicians in the first place. This did him more good than any magic could have. and during those weeks, he did learn a few things -- like how to lie with an innocent face, an essential skill in this complicated world. If nothing else, it would prove useful in dealing with Sarita, particularly when he came home late from the brothel in Chandni Chowk. p116-117
The concept of learning how to lie with an innocent face tells volumes on what most of the book is about, really. It's all learning to live with what you've done.
The mango really couldn't be said to be any single color but, like a rainbow, contained shades of all -- red, yellow, orange, green, even hints of indigo and violet around the bruised regions. But for the impression his thumb ad made, the fruit's smooth egg like shape seemed to capture some essential property of the universe. p121
I LOVED this description.
He felt sorry for her -- because he was going and, even more, because he was coming back. p142
This is another of those lines that says it all. He was going away with his girlfriend, leaving the wife and children at home. He feels sorry for the wife.
They wandered the rooftop, listening to the tender music of the lake. Sonalal was unable to enjoy it, still upset by what Reena had told him and by the realization that tomorrow they'd return to Delhi. Their old lives. He stared at the reflection of heavenly glows on the surface of the lake, trying to capture the image forever. He knew he'd never be back. p156
This made me realize that the way I live life, looking around at things around me, experiencing where I am and whatnot... That's the way it should be, knowing how to BE is the way it should be. It makes you appreciate everything so much more.
They glared at each other with two decades of anger. p163
I know this feeling and yet I don't. Again, it speaks volumes for the feelings in the book and I think the author conveyed feeling to words very well throughout.
