He bowed. At a sign from the master of ceremonies, the music started up once again, and the betrothed couple, both terrified but in perfect unison, proceeded toward the greater companies, which included the cheering crowds, the arrival in Copenhagen, the wedding, their brief marriage, and the Danish revolution. p57
Loved this. There was a touch of humor in there that I couldn't stop smiling at.
Two miles outside the city gates the worn and muddy coaches were brought to a halt and exchanged; new coaches stood ready, with silk traveling rugs in place of blankets, and then the Queen took her place in the coach beside her consort Christian VIII. p123
So glad to see the reality of it.
The coaches were loaded. On the first day only four coaches were to leave. The next day the rest of the enormous amount of baggage would follow. Living a simple country life required extensive organization. p 195
More of that humor.
The King and his court do not appear to be portrayed in a throne room; they have been placed in the midst of a very dark woods, with mighty, dark trunks, as if this coronation scene were being played out in a centuries-old primeval forest in the wilderness of northern Europe. No, there are no pillars, no columns of a church. Darkness, inscrutable tree trunks, a primeval forest in ominous darkness, and in the middle the dazzling assembly. Is it the darkness that is light, or the luminous that is dark? A choice must be made. The same is true of history; people choose what to see, what is light and what is darkness. p303-304
Again I love it. And true about anything. Picking the dark or the light is more than just looking at a painting or finding the "good guy" in Star Wars.
