Oh, phew! Thanks, fuzzi, for starting this. I was worried I'd have to take it over, and I'm not the most reliable thread host.

I will get a ticker going soon.

ETA: went for a walk with a friend this morning. She's been walking along the same route for a while, and thinks it's about 3km, but her husband (who's usually quite on the ball about these things) thinks it's closer to 5km. Despite the fact we were chatting, we got back in about an hour, and it didn't feel like exercise.

Now, if only I can manage to get up early every morning, I can keep this trend up.

I've read that if you find something fun to do for exercise, you're more likely to continue doing it.

That's why I joined the wellness center...they have a pool and I enjoy swimming. :)

fuzzi I am excited to be here again. My problem has been a sprained wrist for the end of 2013. I wasn't able to exercise as hard as I wanted to and couldn't do any Strength Training. Plus the cookies and treats and parties didn't help. Now I am planning to be more active in this coming year and get back to the Y and hopefully get some Strength training in. Went for a walk with my dog in the snow this morning which felt great!!

11fuzzi
Edited: Jan 4, 2014, 12:04 pm

Walking the dog is a great exercise!

I'm not a Spring Chicken, I'm 53, and it has taken me this long to fully appreciate the dynamics of weight loss:

It really is more about what you eat, the amount of food, than exercise.

Exercise is good, and helps to speed up your metabolism, but it only helps some. The big issue is the mouth...and what you put in it.

I've lost 29 pounds since the end of May last year, and it is evident, to me, that eating less of what I want to eat has been the major reason I have lost this much.

::gets off soapbox::

And the support of people here has been a tremendous help, thank you!!!

12crazy4reading
Jan 4, 2014, 1:26 pm

I had lost 50 lbs at my lowest. For me to loose weight I would have to eat very few calories a day without exercise. If I exercise I can eat more. I do need to watch what I put in my mouth.

I have an under active thyroid and that hinders my weight loss. I know when drink my water ever day 4- 32 oz bottles of water and eat salad for lunch and dinner with some protein and have my healthy breakfast I can loose weight. I know that I don't want to eat just salad everyday. I would like to have some carbs every so often.

When I lost my first 10 lbs I was exercising every day for about 45 minutes. Then I started lifting weights and lost more. I have lost a total of 30 lbs and now need to change it up again to start losing again. Not being able to do push ups or put weight on my one wrist has really made it hard. Cardio only does so much.

The support does help a lot. I just bought a fitness tracker to see how much activity I get on a daily basis. This does not include me doing anything more then walking my dog and every.

Okay I went on long enough. Great job on those 29 lbs.

Thanks so much, Fuzzi, for starting this thread. Last year I tried, but only managed to lose 10 pounds. Still, it was in the right direction, at least! This year I am hoping to do better. I do weight watchers and belong to a gym, but all of these things work better when you actually do the program, instead of starting the morning with a healthy breakfast and then moving on to wine, pasta and banana cream pie by the end of the day.

I am going to post a ticker as soon as I figure out how it's done. I did it last year, but this year I have forgotten the process.

I lost 40 pounds last year for a total of 214 pounds.

I set my ticker for 20 pounds. I see everyone has different weights for their tickers. I thought everyone was supposed to start with 20 pound tickers so when the stats are done apples are being compared to apples?

16jjmcgaffey

15> Ah, no one said that - this is my first year. If that's how it's supposed to go I will.

11> It's the reverse, for me - the best adult weight I've ever achieved was while I was eating horribly (lots of candy, cafeteria food, and (since I only had a microwave) frozen Chicken Kiev and variations was my most common "home" food). And I was 30 - not a teen, who can manage that kind of diet. However, I was also attending university in London, without a car and living off campus - I was walking and biking a lot, taking the Tube regularly and the bus occasionally, and very rarely getting a ride from a teacher. I had a pedometer and was easily achieving the 10,000 steps a day. Now I'm back in the States with a car, and that constant walking just doesn't happen - if it did, I'd be a lot lighter! My diet is about half healthy now - good, low-fat food, but rather a lot of it (plus candy and sweets - not a lot, but some), but my exercise levels are a lot lower.

I guess the reason is always the one you're not getting...

17fuzzi
Edited: Jan 4, 2014, 7:39 pm

Morphy, I set my ticker last year at 22 pounds, didn't know of any standard weight to lose.

I'm easy with whatever people want as a goal. I can figure out percentages later.

It just seems it would be more fair if people were using the same amounts. If someone wants to lose more, they can start a new ticker once the first one has been accomplished. That's what I did last year. Though I suppose a 22 pound ticker isn't THAT much of a difference. But I saw one person had 55 pounds down!

19tymfos
Edited: Jan 4, 2014, 9:35 pm

I'm thinking about this . . . I was doing well with my weight loss until we went on vacation last August, then I sort of gained, and managed to lose what I'd gained on vacation, and then stopped losing . . . I haven't gotten on the scales since we got back from our holiday trip. I'm sure I gained.

I listen to audio books with headphones while I exercise. If I have a really suspenseful book, I tend to exercise a lot until it's done!

I'll wait and see what you all want to do about goals and tickers and then decide.

I'm voting no, because I'm doing what I did last year (and starting from almost the same position as last year). I'm planning on losing just under 10kg. It was closer to 10kg from the point I saw my GP just under a year ago, so I have a fixed target weight I'm aiming for.

Feb 17, 2014, 8:46 pm

I've updated my ticker, which is moving *sigh* in the wrong direction.

I started out quite well, but I'm now spring cleaning (there are piles of stuff on the kitchen tables, on the guest room bed, on the floors … you get the picture) which for me encompasses attempting to prevent mold forming etc. etc. - so I haven't been exercising for a while. I did start off well, but I had to drop a couple of things due to circumstances outside my control. Really. :0) Unfortunately, my walking partner's morning commitments and mine are currently out of sync, but we still get together to walk (and talk) on the weekends. And I had to give up my pilates class, because my son finishes Kindergarten an hour later than before (next year he goes to 'big' school), so the timings clash.

But I'm thinking of trying aqua spin (underwater cycling) this week; I hear good things about it.

By the way, fuzzi, my metabolism seems to work the opposite way from yours. Even when I was eating more salads and being really careful about what I ate, after a point, I didn't lose weight until I started exercising more earnestly. Apparently, if we cut back too much, our bodies goes into hibernation mode and start storing reserves, which is the theory behind why we're supposed to eat 5 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones, or even 2 big ones. I should just copy my little boy, who is always asking for food, but gets full really quickly and doesn't eat much in one go. Skinny little monkey. (Mind you, at that age they burn it off quickly, and have lots of energy.)

49fuzzi
Feb 17, 2014, 9:32 pm

You're right about metabolism. I think I've hit my plateau, and will have to start ramping up the exercise.

Did you know that using free weights can not only tone your muscles, but can burn calories? I might start doing those again, I still have my 5 and 10 pound dumbbells. And I can do them at home...

50jjmcgaffey
Feb 18, 2014, 3:13 am

Yay, I actually managed to drop a pound (nearly two, actually) and _keep_ it off until Monday. I've seen this weight several times in the last few weeks, but not on Mondays...

I do Shovelglove (sort of - it's easy to vary). It's fun, and good exercise - gets me sweating nicely (I do it in the morning, before I shower). http://www.shovelglove.com/ - basically, you get a sledgehammer (I use an 8-pound one) with a long handle. Then you do "useful movements" - movements that imitate actual tasks, like, say, shoveling. Between the movements and the weight, it's very nice exercise, and you can make up a pattern that makes sense to you. One really nice thing about it, for me, is that it's arm (and core) exercise - I get quite a bit of exercise for my legs, with walking, but not so much for my arms.

My pattern is:
40 shovels (pretend you're shoveling snow and throwing it to the side of your forward hand. You can add a lunge, if you like. 20/side);
40 sack-hoists (hang the sledgehammer against my back, and lift it up as if I were hoisting a sack. I put the head at the top of my butt, and pull it up until it reaches the nape of my neck. Again, 20/side, alternating by 5s (5 left, 5 right, 5 left...));
40 fencepoles (swing the hammer in a big vertical(ish) circle, aiming for a point in front of me at chest level, as if I were hammering in a fencepole);
40 sidelifts (hold the hammer just below the head, at the balance point, with my arm straight down at my side. Lift it straight up along my side as high as I can get it. 20/side, alternating by 10s);
40 wood-chops (stand slightly squatted - knees bent, butt tucked. Swing hammer down, aiming at a point in front of me just above knee level, then swing it back up and behind my head until I feel my abs stretch);
40 flip-curls (hold hammer one fingerlength below the collar, arm straight down, palm towards me. Swing up to chest level, down and behind me. I do 15 fast - that is, let the weight of the hammer drive the swing - then 5 slow, raising it and lowering it over 3-4 seconds. I've done it all slow before, but I dropped out for quite a while and my arms aren't up to 20 slow right now. 20/side, alternating by 10s);
40 churns (very phallic, especially as I have to squat slightly to keep from hitting the ceiling. Hold the hammer with both hands (alternate which is below and doing the driving), just above the collar with the hammer head down. Start with hammer at crotch level; raise it until head is at/just above eye level. Lower again. 20/side, alternating by 5s);
tiptoes (put hammer head on the ground, so the handle is standing up in front of you. Using it as necessary for balance, stand on my toes (ok, ball of foot) for 10 seconds; lower heel to ground but don't actually touch down, go back up. 3 reps); and
toe-touches (Put hammer away. Feet wide apart, slowly touch the ground (or as close as I can get!) directly in front of you 10 times. Feet still wide apart, slowly touch the feet (or as close...), alternating left and right for a total of 10. Feet shoulder-width apart, slowly touch the ground 10 times. A backbend before beginning each section really helps).

I've gotten up to 50 reps, then stopped for a long while. I was doing 30s when I restarted this time (15/side) - when I first started, I was doing 10/side. And I can now put my hands flat on the ground on the first section of toe-touches, and fingers flat on the third section, at least by the 8th or 9th touch - when I started, I was getting as far down as mid-shin by the 10th touch.

Oh, and you're supposed to do it for 14 minutes. I stopped tracking that way, it really didn't work for me - I like finishing my session. Now I track how long it takes me to do it (set my Fitbit on timer mode) - it's about 15:30 these days. When I'm doing 50 reps, it's closer to 20 minutes. So in many ways, I'm not doing what the guy set up as shovelglove - heh, for that matter, I never bothered to wrap my hammer. I don't hit anything. But the concept is there, and I like it - the shovel itself, and the "useful movements". And staying upright while I exercise.

I have gained a couple of pounds, but since I have burned my bridges, given away my big clothes, I have an incentive to not gain weight.

69humouress
Edited: Jun 6, 2014, 10:10 am

Hmm; well - offered to make birthday cakes for my husband's nieces only to discover they were both having their parties on the same day. One cake collapsed and I had to start again, so there was a lot of left-over cake this week (enough, in fact to make cake pops for the first time - 30 for one son's last day of term and 40 for the other's market day project, of which all but 2 sold out at a profit to them of 75c each). So the scales drifted even further northwards to (unfortunately) even higher than my original starting point.

Fortunately it does seem to have been a blip, and I'm back down to the same old see-saw point that I've been struggling with over the past couple of months.

A lot of the problem is that all the exercise sessions I started the year off with have dropped by the wayside one by one, for various reasons (my schedule no longer coincides with my friend's, so our walks can only occur on weekends; but since she's come back from holiday, I haven't started walking with her again, partly from working through the nights on those cakes)(my son's Kindy day is longer this year, in preparation for 'big' school next year, so I can no longer get to the Pilates class I was doing because I have to pick him up at that time) and the less exercise I have scheduled, the more lazy I feel. There are a couple of things I could just turn up to, but since I don't have to be there, I usually chicken out of going at the last moment (I'm treasuring my peaceful mornings to myself. There are a few projects around the house that I've been intending doing while the kids are out of my hair, and they're getting done ... slowly). But that's why the scales have been trending upwards.

I think if I can convince myself to get to one thing, I can snowball it into a few more things, and start eating more healthily again too, to start shedding weight. I have a lot of inertia in these matters, so - though the intent is there - it takes me a while to build up momentum. I'm just in a comfortable groove at the moment, but I'm looking wistfully at those nice outfits I splurged on when I lost weight last year ... so (hopefully) I'll start moving in the right direction soon.

Um. Probably a bit more than you really wanted to know. Sorry. :0)

Okay; I've been very bad and not done any exercise for ages. The scales are back up to where the GP gently suggested I lose weight. They've been wavering around a particular kilo mark, and today (finally) dipped just under.

I suspect this is just a temporary situation, because this evening we went out with friends and all the kids to see the lights put up for the mid autumn festival, so there was a lot of walking. Tomorrow, though, we're going out with my sister (who's in town for the week on work) for high tea.

(a lantern shaped as a pavilion floating on a lake, in front of Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer)

I did actually sign up for an aqua spin class, but I ended up not going because I had a late night the night before, finishing off Teachers' Day presents for the kids to take in, as they'd gone to bed, and I was waiting for a confirmation e-mail about my place in the class (they were trying to open up a new time). Well, that's my story. Hoping to make it this week.

I've not been swimming since late June, partly because of my father visiting, but recently because we're in recruitment season at work...after 10 hour days I don't feel much like exercising. I intend to get back, soon.

Just got the confirmation e-mail, with the new timing ... no excuse now! (Bet I'll still try to find one, though!)

Well I haven't done that great the past couple of months. This past Wed. my Online Biggest Loser Challenge on Spark People started and I have been exercising and eating well. I have stayed below my calorie range even after all that exercising.

I have a supervisor at work that goes for a walk everyday at work so I join her. We do about 8 laps which equals about 3 miles. I started out only doing 4 laps because I needed new shoes. So starting Monday I am going to go for 8 laps. I also have been doing a squat challenge. Working my way up to doing 250 squats. Today I have to do 180 squats. I do them in sets of 20 reps.

So I am going to get my mojo back because I have my daughter's Wedding Oct. 3 and I am afraid I may not fit into my dress.

>77 fuzzi: I had 10 hour days during the summer and it was hard eating right and exercising. Now I get up at about 4 or 4:30 am everyday and go to bed around 8 or 8:30 pm.

>76 humouress: love the picture!! Glad to see the scales going down.

>78 humouress: You will enjoy that aqua spin class!! I had to discontinue my gym/Y membership because I couldn't afford it anymore. I miss the classes I went to. Now I keep doing videos and trying to find free or inexpensive classes to go to.

I finally started the aqua spin class, and have done 2 so far. The good thing is that there's no muscle ache the next day, apparently because it's done in water. Or it may also be because it's so hot here, even if you don't warm up and cool down (though I should, really), your muscles don't seize up afterwards.

(ETA : I'm still a bit tentative about starting off cycling at 100%, because I know the instructor will ask us to push it to 120%, but I talked to a fellow volunteer-librarian who's been doing it for a year, and she tells me that after a bit, it gets easy to hit the 120%.)

Unfortunately, the scales are still hovering around (just above) that same kilo mark. This week, I've signed the kids & myself up for the annual 4-day swim, where I said I'd swim 25 laps of 25m over each of 4 days out of the next 5, so I thought that'd help. Unfortunately, this morning I woke up with a gunky eye, so I'll have to check with the doctor if I'm allowed to get into a pool with it.

And I've been having far too many late nights (bad habit, mainly), so my weekend walks with my friend have gone by the wayside for the nonce. Time to kick it up a notch,because all my jeans are ganging up on me and shrinking.

>79 crazy4reading: Wishing you the best of luck to hit your target. Myself, I doubt I could do one set of 20 squats. I hate anything that impacts my knees too much.

>79 crazy4reading: >80 humouress: glad to see you are both still "plugging away"!

I'm still at or slightly above my plateau weight. I have to get more serious about 1/2 portions again, which I stopped doing. Argh.

I rejoined WW a little over two weeks ago. I am really appalled at how heavy I've gotten. Weigh ins are Tuesday. The first two weeks went really well (- 6.2 pounds). This week I'm struggling.

The first week the leader said "If you totally commit to this for a year, you will **NEVER** regret it. Wow--can't think of many things in life like that. So I'll commit to this thread, too.

I've also started my little warrior on HabitRPG.com which is a fun way to keep track of things you want to make into habits.

>80 humouress: I don't go down that far when doing squats. Today I have done sets of 40 since I have to do 190 squats.

>81 fuzzi: What do you mean by 1/2 portions.

>82 streamsong: good luck with the WW. I know a woman that did WW and lost weight and has kept it off.

>83 crazy4reading: it's my method of losing weight: I eat 1/2 of what I want, half portions. In one year I lost 40 pounds!

Whatever works...

I hope you're proud of me, folks; the GP cleared me to swim from Wednesday, so yesterday I swam 25 x 25m laps. And the scales finally slipped below that kilo mark I've been struggling with - despite having ice cream for dessert after lunch (since the kids and I went out for lunch).

I swam again this morning, but I've got to do another 25 this evening, since I missed the first two days of the swim, so it's not strictly a 4 day swim for me.

I haven't been eating extravagantly for a while now (well, I do still have my chocolate, and at the moment, I'm the only one working my way through the second of two boxes of moon cakes), so I find that unless I exercise as well (which I haven't been), my body just adapts to the reduced portions and I don't lose weight. Yesterday, I ordered a salad for lunch (but I did indulge in adding breaded fish) and only ate half, and brought home the other half for dinner; and normally, I doubt I'd have lost any weight. (I'm even only eating half a moon cake at a time.)

OK - got to dash out for the second of my swims today.

I was up slightly at my weigh in on Tuesday, but had had a bigger-than-expected loss the week before so I think it evens out. That's how I lose weight - big downs followed by slight ups.

Total weight loss so far: 5.2 pounds.

I'm really enjoying keeping track of the habits I want to change on www.habbitrpg.com It may be silly, but I am tickled that I am now riding around on a golden lion. :-)

The only one I've gotten up to a mount is a cotton candy blue cactus. It looks a little odd. I do have a red fox pet with me...

Yeah, HabitRPG is fun. And useful - I didn't walk my 5000 steps yesterday, and it's noticeable there. Gonna work on it for today!

Ah well; we took a mini-break to Legoland, and my weight is back up. I've nearly broken the upper limit of the kilo mark. :0( Though I did get a good work out climbing stairs for the water slides and hauling a couple of heavy inflatable tubes up.

Up and down, up and down. I seem to be stuck within 4 pounds of my plateau weight that I reached back in June.

And the holidays are coming...arrgh!
