2014 is upon us and it is time to renew our endeavors. We're all signed up because we need to read the books that were sitting on our shelves unloved and unread. Well, 2014 will be here tomorrow and I see us all teaming up again to encourage each other to read those TBRs.
Let's see the new Tickers sparkle with enormous proportions so that we dig deep and weed out those UNREAD BOOKS!

So, I'm setting up these tickers (password ROOT) that everyone can show their progress toward a comprehensive goal for all of us. Wouldn't it be great if we could together read 4,000 books that have been sitting on our shelves too long? IN 2013 WE READ NEARLY 4000 BOOKS OFF OUR OWN SHELVES! That's awesome! But WE can do better!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to ask for your assistance keeping the totals in 2014.
Please post your personal tickers in the ticker thread or post your monthly progress here at the end of the month so that I can gather the numbers in one thread as much as possible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated.
So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOK LOVERS, BIBLIOPHILES, BOOK HOARDERS - get out there and read those BOOKS!
Our goal for January is 419.
3dudes22
AARGH! I just finished my first book this year and it wasn't even a Root. I know eventually I'll get back to normal, but seems like I have a million things and am getting pulled in a million different directions right now. I do have a couple of Roots started, so maybe I'll be able to finish them before the month ends.

I'm working on my #4 now, and next up will be #5 'cause it's an ER one that's already a little late so it'll be cutting the library books that were in line, lol.
5Tallulah_Rose
>3 dudes22: dudes22 It's annoying when life get's in the way with reading. I can so relate to that feeking of a million things going on. We are also having so many things piled up right now that need to be worked up. Ad reading-wise I habe not been able to settle down on which to read at first.

I'm starting ROOT # 3 today.
De bijzondere kinderen van mevrouw Peregrine by Ransom Riggs

378 pages. Bought in 2012 on april 14
The translation of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children = Mevrouw Peregrine's huis voor bijzondere/eigenaardige kinderen
De bijzondere kinderen van mevrouw Peregrine = The special children of miss Peregrine.
This is not a correct translation, I think. You could explain the Dutch title in the wrong way; These are all Mrs. P. own childeren.
The English title makes sure you know it's about a home for those children.
A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob on a journey to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow-- impossible though it seems-- they may still be alive

I'm on the board. Finally finished my first Root of 2014. Hurray!!

I finished my fifth ROOT, The Pure in Heart by Susan Hill. Whew. She writes such intense mysteries.
Updating tickers.

I love that Susan Hill mystery series. I have one on tap for next month -- and it's a ROOT.
14Merryann
Wow! We're slightly over half-way through the month, and over half-way to our monthly goal. I bet we make it!
I updated this monthly ticker with my numbers (for my first time). It was easy! But if anything is wrong with them now, please let me know, Chèli. Thanks.

I just finished my third root of the year, The Ring of Words: Tolkien and the Oxford English Dictionary. Off to update tickers now.
17kac522
Finished my third root for 2014 toward my goal of 30. After falling woefully behind in 2013, I'm at least starting out on track in 2014! All tickers updated.
20Henrik_Madsen
Another one done: Postkort til Annie by Ida Jessen. Tickers updated!
22majkia
Sixth ROOT # League of Frightened Men by Rex Stout. Updating tickers.
23Merryann
I've finished a whole bunch of fiction picture books. They don't count as ROOTs, but I left a short comment on each on my thread, in case anyone is interested.
Now, I'm going to go read the hilarious Falling for Rapunzel out loud to my daughter, who needs a distraction from her college studying.

I have been on such a reading tear that I neglected to add a few books to my ROOTs list. I am 14 on the month thus far & have updated just my ticker.
27Tallulah_Rose
14 is definitely great! Congratulations to that absolut fabulous start into the year!
30SuziQoregon
I spent my lunch break finishing my second ROOT of the year. So far so good since my goal is 18 ROOTs.
I enjoyed Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs quite a bit. I had no idea what to expect but I liked it.
Updated my ticker but not the ones here.

my 6th ROOT, from 2012, The January Dancer by Michael Flynn. Tickers updated.
34Merryann
I read over half of a book, enough to know I don't want to read it and don't need to keep it. I was sitting here feeling proud of myself for finally learning how to stop reading a book that's upsetting me. (The key is to take deep breaths and chant three times "The world will not fling itself out of orbit if I stop reading this book." And then skip to the end to confirm it all comes out okay in one sense or another.)
Anyway, it suddenly dawned on me that this may NOT count as a ROOT. I think it does, because I gave it a good try, and it frees up space on the shelf. But does it?

35Henrik_Madsen
Of course it does! One way of the other that I-have-no-idea-what's-between-the-covers feeling is gone.
37leslie.98
I finished my second ROOT (The Red Box), and updated my ticker but not the ones here.
38.Monkey.
>34 Merryann: Yup, it counts. :)
39Tallulah_Rose
>34 Merryann: It'd count for me. You started it, know what's it about and you cleared it off your shelf. Despite that, you make your own rules and if you say it counts, it counts.
40connie53
Yes, I would count it as a ROOT. It's of the shelves! And maybe you have other Evanoviches you can discard!
41Merryann
>34 Merryann: - 40, Thank you everyone. It's ROOTed out, and will be walked up to the Little Free Library tomorrow!
Leslie, congratulations on finishing The Red Box!

Well I finally finished my first ROOT for this year - Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman.
43Tallulah_Rose
Congratulations!
47ipsoivan
I finally finished my first too. I started Moby-Dick (I can't for the life of me figure out why it has the hyphen in the title but nowhere else in the book) back on Jan. 1. It is a whopping 823 pp., much of it to be taken extraordinarily slowly to stay alert to what Melville might be up to.
Many others on LT have commented that they did not enjoy the middle section, which really is most of the book, because it goes into whaling details that don't really add much to the novel. But, as Melville spells out, this isn't really an adventure story, but an allegory. Of course he is so good at the adventure bits, we just want more of them. I did find much of the whaling detail weirdly entrancing.
This is just an incredibly odd book. I love it.
Oh, and I've updated my personal ticker as well as both group tickers.
The Recognitions by William Gaddis is up next: 956 pp. I did say this is the year for the BIG books for me!

Yeah, well, last year I had more books in my challenge, but a lot were small, quick reads and the long ones languished. This year I'm tackling the long ones, partly through ROOT and partly through the TBR group, where I've listed 24 BIG books.
50.Monkey.
Yeah, I think if you wait on the big ones they turn into this "uh oh will I get it done in time" and whatnot, so it works better to just try to knock them out earlier on when you don't have to worry about it. :)
51majkia
Finished my 8th for the month. Updating tickers. A Trace of Smoke was quite intriguing, btw.
52lindapanzo
Just finished Bleak House by Charles Dickens. At over 1,000 pages, it's going to clear a lot of space off my shelf.
53ipsoivan
>52 lindapanzo: I am among the fans of Bleak House. Did you enjoy it, lindapanzo?
>50 .Monkey.: PM, yeah, the long read in a challenge is a struggle. I did end up reading some chunky ones early last year, and then I panicked because I was making so little progress on the challenge. And the chunksters were on my kindle, so no progress on the shelves. I did knock off a good number of the smaller ones later as redemption after the early long ones!
Whatever--thick or thin, I still have too many unread or forgotten ones.

#53 The first part, I had a hard time keeping the characters straight and it all didn't fit together for me, but after about two-thirds through, I thought it was magnificent.

I just got caught up here again and everyone is doing so well for it being just the beginning of the year. Seems I read a lot in Orange January & July & All Virago/All August too. Then must make a big push at year's end.
I am hoping to get to some Dickens this year myself & have been wanting to read Bleak House forever so perhaps this will be the year for that one.
Good job everyone!

Yay! I just added 2 more ROOTs and shifted the % ticker .1%. As others have said, adding ones roots seldom makes a difference, but for once it did. I have been absent for a while as I was reading The Luminaries, so feeling pretty pleased to have knocked off 832 pages and then slipped The Alchemist in which was much shorter.
57Familyhistorian
I just added one more ROOT read and updated my ticker.
58Tallulah_Rose
I can definitely recommend Bleak House. As lindapazo said, it's a bit difficult to make sense of it in the beginning, but after the half of it it takes up pace and makes more sense. I liked all the different characters, how they were drawn and how they fitted together all of a sudden. Someday I'll definitely read it again, but not this year! :-D
59Henrik_Madsen
I just added my fifth ROOT of the year: Hergé: Den mystiske stjerne Various tickers updated!
60connie53
I just finished ROOT #3 - De bijzondere kinderen van mevrouw Peregrine by Ransom Riggs. Going to update both group tickers and my own.
61cyderry
I just ran a preliminary count on just the ticker thread and we are barely over 100 short for this month's goal! When I tally up those with no ticker and tickers not on the ticker thread at the end of the month we could be really close!
So for those who haven't copied their ticker to the ticker thread yet, now's the time! And for those that have no ticker, if you need help, just let us know, we'll be glad to help you get one!

I'll have at least one more done (on the last story), not sure if I'll get another or not, I've got a library book going now. We'll see!
63leslie.98
ROOT #3 done for me (probably my last for January, as I have a stack of library books waiting) - Vile Bodies which I found very amusing! I updated my ticker but not the group ones.
64majkia
9th ROOT for me. A very fun space opera with an Indiana Jones type sussing out a puzzle, Polaris by Jack McDevitt. Updating all tickers.
65Merryann
12 ROOTS in total finished, and I just updated the January tickers to add the most recent 7.
Most recent reads, and short comments:
1. 'Cover-Up' by John Feinstein
Teenage detectives uncover a plot to hide illegal drug use in Superbowl players. Well-written book that left me with a feeling of respect for football players. I didn't expect that.
2. The Little Book of Letting Go by Hugh Prather
This author and I are planning to arrive at the same destination, that of peace and well-being, but we take totally different roads. Still, worth the read for the moment when he said basically, 'how can you expect to control anything if you can't even control when you get out of bed? (referring to chronic 'snooze' button pushers like myself)
3. The Toff and the Trip-Trip-Triplets by John Creasey
I was delighted and surprised to learn that this mystery-solver, recently discovered by me, actually ages. The Toff of 1972 is an older and wiser Richard Rollison than the one of the 1950s. Delightful read.
4. The Ever-Loving Blues by Carter Brown
Wisecracking, action-filled, very dated detective story. I loved it!

Finished my second ROOT The Mosquito Coast. Updated tickers. I will post a review on my thread soon.
69tymfos
I finished my 5th ROOT of the month, Southern Lady, Yankee Spy. I've updated the tickers.
71leslie.98
Merryann, I listened via the internet as I live in the U.S. but of course in England it is available on the radio :) Programs are only available for one week after they air, so the Creasey dramatizations aren't available any more. However, they do a lot of similar books so I include the link here in case you want to try it. I find Radio 4 and 4X do the most books...

It's snowing! Big fluffy flakes of stay-inside-snuggled-up-with-a-book-all-day!
I live in the southern United States where this is a rarity. Even a couple of weeks ago when we were out of school for two days, it was just because of the cold. We didn't get any snow to play in.
All you people in cold climates, send me your snow! I want enough to build my first snowman in several years. Please?

You want the snow? You can have it. I'm in Chicagoland, and it's been either snow or bitter, life-threatening cold since December. (I'm counting down for my vacation in Tuscon, but that's still a month away...)
75avanders
Ooh, I wish we had snow. Also in Southwestern US.... but originally from Wisconsin and Chicago! And unlike most Chicagoans (like my husband), I never hated the snow, even in the worst of blizzard conditions... miss it!!!

I've reached my goal of three ROOT books for the month. Now if only I can keep it up the rest of the year.
1. Gods and Myths of Northern Europe by H. R. Ellis Davidson (2004)
2. Blue Highways: A Journey into America by William Least Heat-Moon (2009)
3. Kleine deutsche Versschule by Wolfgang Kayser (2011)

I've finished my second book for the year - Butcher's Hill by Laura Lippman. I'm going to start another Root tonight when I get hom, but not sure if I'll finish it or not by the end of the week.
80AuntieClio
I read 6 ROOTs this month (my rule is off the shelf and out of the house to count for a ROOT)
81kac522
>73 Merryann:,74,75 I'm also in Chicago. The snow is always fun in the beginning, but right now we're all suffering from cabin fever. The only good thing is that I've gotten a lot of reading done--woo hoo!--3 ROOTs and several library books and reading for my class (which of course isn't meeting because of the snow and cold...)
82Settings
I'm living in Syracuse, New York right now, which is the snowiest city in the United States. Three times more snow than Chicago :) . I like it, it makes winter pretty instead of dead looking, but I am waiting expectantly for the temperature to warm up. On Thursday the high will be 28 degrees and it will feel balmy.
On the ROOTs, it looks like I'm not going to finish the 4 books I need to finish the monthly goal. The semester has started again so my ability to finish anything has come to a screeching halt, and I'm reading a non-ROOT in a foreign language that is eating up all of my free time.

I don't think I'll get through any more ROOTs this month, as everything I'm reading now is borrowed from one source or another. So I end the month with 5.
85.Monkey.
Finished #6. Not sure if I'll get to another this month or not, still have to decide whether I'm reading the next library book or a ROOT...
86Tallulah_Rose
I'll defintely not finish any more ROOTs this month, so I'm on target with 2 ROOTs in January. Have now started The Silmarillon and it's very interesting and not so difficult to read (at least the german translation). A bit difficult to keep all the names and places straight, especially since the places are all differently named from The Lord of the Rings, although the map is basically the same. At least I think so.
87jen.e.moore
For help reading The Silmarillion I highly recommend The Silmarillion Reader's Guide. Nifty charts and things to keep everyone straight. :) (Or the more comedic version here, but that one's only halfway through.)
88lindapanzo
Just finished my third ROOT of the month which puts me right on pace towards my goal.
89kkunker
For in-depth help with The Silmarillion I would recommend The Tolkien Professor's Silmarillion Seminar, if you like podcasts. Professor Olsen has a 35 episode discussion of the book, some chapters get multiple episodes. It's all posted for free on Itunes and his website here:

Everyone seems to be doing well. I'll be starting the data collection tomorrow, so please make sure that your tickers or threads are up-to-date.
91cyderry
I did some preliminary reconnoitering to find the threads of those who are not on the ticker thread and found that some of the people who signed up are MIA - no where to be found on LT - so I've adjusted the group goal down until they reappear.
92Tallulah_Rose
>87 jen.e.moore:, 89 thanks for the hints to help reading The Silmarillon. I might check out the guide, but I'm not yet sure about the lecture. I don't think I'll so many in-depth information, but I will listen in and decide.

yes, those are the adjusted numbers so far this month. When I put put up February's thread, I will have the breakdown for everyone that is being counted. If someone's name is missing, that means I couldn't find their ticker on the ticker thread or their individual thread.

We are doing well this far.
Once again Cheli thank you for all your hard work. How's your Mom doing?
Just to say that I'm reading my second ROOT of the month, its another omnibus monster edition, I should finish this tomorrow but I suspect that I'll finish reading it close to midnight UK time...

Everyone is doing so well! I am doing well on my long reads, but I'm realizing that I may need to *reduce* my number, unlike Robert.
I have committed to 30, with one long read per month, but so far my long read of January, Moby-Dick, took most of the month with little room for other books, and my long read of February, The Recognitions, is even longer. Yikes.

Regarding Post 73's weather responses, I'd like to thank everyone for sending me your snow. We got three inches! I can't even remember the last time there was three inches of snow in my yard. Tomorrow, we'll go get my daughter's car from where she had to leave it (an hour away), but that's okay...we got my daughter home safely the day of the snowstorm.
When you all send me snow, you do a good and FAST job at sending it! Thanks!
Seriously, to all of you living in places where winter is real: stay safe, and warm, and know that spring will be here soon.
I usually get an overabundance of August, and I'll send you my extra heat and sunshine this weekend, okay?
Regarding ROOTing: I updated my tickers and this January one for my total of 16. I did this before I saw Chèli's post that she's compiling the numbers now, so I hope I haven't messed up.
I can't find words to express how uplifting I am finding it being among readers. Thank you all for ROOTing along with me. :)
When you all send me snow, you do a good and FAST job at sending it! Thanks!
Seriously, to all of you living in places where winter is real: stay safe, and warm, and know that spring will be here soon.

merryann, we are twins for the month of January. I ROOTed 16 myself.
I just can't believe how well everyone is doing!
I have updated my personal ticker but have not touched the group ones as the percentage ticker just confuses the heck out of me.
Thanks Cheli for all of your efforts here and I hope all is going well with your mum.

Finished the fifth root for January. Nice.
The only problem I have is that I keep getting loaners from brother and daughter. Although I think in brother's case it's a matter of, "Of course you can take these if you want." He's only asked me to return 3.
Wait. Could that be his personal ROOTs program???
Off to update my own tickers.

Gong xi fa cai is the traditional greeting for Chinese New Year. It means something like "have a happy and prosperous year".

I can't speak for anyone else, but I know for me, Jan & Feb tend to be high volume months. I generally "start the year with a bang" and make a nice dent in my reading. The trouble then becomes keeping up with it after things settle down.

111> I'm trying a new system this year and it seems to make it easier to update the ticker more frequently. Usually I didn't adjust the ticker until the end of the month, but the new system, with the ticker thread, makes it easier and faster. So if anyone still hasn't put their ticker on the ticker thread, now's the time!
FYI- FUTURE MESSAGES if they don't make sense, check to see if a word is missing a "t". Sometimes I type so fast and the T on my keyboard sticks and I don't notice that the T is missing.

My goal was to read 2 books per month and one extra at some point in the year. I'm not on course to finish ROOT #2 today sadly, life with a 2 month old has somewhat taken over, but I am about half way through it and think I will just go for a short book next to try and catch up in February!

My personal ticker is up to date, and I haven't touched the group one - I'm at seven (!) ROOTs for January. Since my goal was two...I think I'm doing all right. :D

Finish my second ROOT Beneath The Bleeding and have updated all tickers.

Robertgreaves; Thank you & I wish you Gong xi fa cai as well.

Same with me Monkey but especially January. I always hit it running to the bereavement of house & household. Just can't seem to help myself. January, July & August are my 'manic reading' months. And then of course the push at year's end. Other than those months I seem to settle in at around 8 books per month. (not all ROOTs) And I can remember months when I have only read 2 or 3 books as R/L occasionally does get in the way.

Right on target Ava. Excellent job. Congrats!
And LOVING the gif!
>115 Jackie_K::
Jackie, I can remember those very long ago days with my newborns and sometimes I was unable to complete a single book in a month's time. Babies WILL always take over our lives & I think that it is meant to be that way. You will never be sorry for time invested in your little one. Now I am watching my own granddaughters try for a page or two a day with their infants & toddlers and wishing I could turn the clock back to when I had a snuggler in my arms at all times. Enjoy.........
Congrats everyone. Excellent month!~! Rah!~!
I am in the midst of an excellent book right now, A Woman in Berlin, but I won't count it as I just acquired it last May. But maybe the next one will be a ROOT.

I'm going to have a readathon tonight to try to finish my 7th ROOT. That will make 7/8 books completed this month ROOTS. Off to a running start!

115> Me too - although not due to a 2 month old, congratulations. February will definitely be a month for short ROOTs for me too.
123Kaydeanne
I was aiming for four in January but the fourth one wasn't finished in time. Oh well my first one for February will be done on the very first day of the month.
124christina_reads
I finished my last January book at about 11:30pm, so I made it to 6 ROOTs for the month! :) My ticker is updated, but I haven't touched any group tickers.

>115 Jackie_K:. Jackie you are doing amazingly well to read at all with a new baby. So one is great.
I have completed 5 for the month so ahead of schedule. A good thing with my daughter's wedding this month. Off to update tickers.

I completed 5 ROOTS for January as well and my goal is just under 3 a month. I am not sure if I can keep this up. All of those new books that keep coming into the house are hard to resist.
127connie53
Did anyone notice we surpassed our month goal of 419 books? We have 452 books read in january! Keep it up, TEAM ROOTers.
128dudes22
I'm not sure what happened in Jan (I suspect to much time on LT :)), but I fell short of my Root goals. I only managed 2 Roots and 2 library books - way short of my usual reading levels. Luckily we going on vacation the end of Feb and I should be able to get back on track.

Hello everyone! My January was pretty good considering that one of my ROOTs was 500 pages long! In keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for this month:
Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 4
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 9
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 1
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 38
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 16
I started reading The Beach House by Mary Alice Monroe yesterday afternoon - but I went to bed at about 12:30 A. M., so I didn't get a chance to collect my stats until this afternoon.

I thought I had posted here last night but apparently not, I did post to my thread so my ticker is right for January. I read 8 ROOTS against my goal of 30.

Hi there, everyone! I had a really good reading January this year - the same number of books that I read last January, but still good! :) In keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for the month:
Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 0
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 6
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 0
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 292 (gulp!)
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 1
Leaves Swept Up: stands for books that were purged: 5
Many of the books that I read were ebooks, but I acquired way more than I was expecting to - oh dear!
