I tried to read Lolita, but had great difficulty with the subject matter ( paedophilia) .. Nabokovo wrote in the first person style so the actual engagement with the story somehow made me feel implicit in his crime.The voyeuristic nature of the subject made me feel repulsed as I wasn't able to effectively distance myself from the story. Reflecting, I suppose that's one purpose of good literature, to have a physical reaction from text.
I see some other readers here talk about the use of french.. I too found that an interruption to the flow of the book but I think it might be indicative of Humbert's arrogant and condescending character .. remember it's not Nabokov telling the story it's Humbert Humbert. ps how do we nominate for writer of the month?
