I read them when I was about 12 or so. I don't know that I liked them that much, but I kept reading on in fascination, eager to find out what would happen next.

Thanks for posting that link, it was a lovely insight into Peyton's life and inspirations. I read all four of the Flambards titles, liked the first three but hated the last one with a passion and have to pretend it was never written and all the characters remained as they were at the end of Flambards in summer! None of Peyton's books are exactly comfort reads - there is too much reality of the struggles in life in them - but they are all peopled with memorable characters (human and animal) and take place in vivid, well-drawn settings.

@Sakerfalcon, glad you liked it.

It's funny you should mention that the first three were good, but you hated the fourth...I feel that way about the Silver Chief books. If you ever get a chance to read them, skip the fourth...no, the dog doesn't die, but it's as if the book was written by a different author who'd not bothered to read the first three. Weird.
