Tomorrow starts USDA's 5th annual Pollinator Festival. Yay!

Check out this page especially the link at the bottom of the page which will take you to "32 different planting guides to improve pollinator habitat, each one tailored to a specific ecoregion in the United States. Each guide is filled with an abundance of native plant and pollinator information. Enter your zip code to find your ecoregion planting guide and download it for free."

Thanks honey!

I'm reading The Bees right now. Sort of serendipity since I wasn't looking for it at the library, it just happened to be on the new books shelf as I walked by!

The New York Times had a nice article this weekend.

Can You Pick the Bees Out of This Insect Lineup?

I had all but one.

A moth trap. It’s not what you might think. Take a look at some beauties:

>7 2wonderY: Very cool. I almost ate a caterpillar on a green bean a couple of weeks ago. Happily I saw him just before I popped the green bean in my mouth. He was the exact color of the bean and smooth. Just looked like a bump on the bean. So I put it in a jar with a lid which I poked holes in and fed it beans. It nibbled and pooped (lovely green balls) for a couple of days then went to the lid and formed a cocoon. Yesterday it emerged. A lovely grey with orange specks on its lobed wings. About an inch across. I'm actually not sure if it was a butterfly or a moth. I sent the jar to my grandson (2 years old) because he had examined the jar every day and said, "wow!" My husband said he was sad when it flew away, then waved and said, "Bye!" He is just starting to say words. Mostly he speaks in sound effects and sign language.

ETA: Did a little research, it was a Lycaenid Pod Borer. Pest in the garden, pretty in the jar.
