Happy Canada Day and 4th of July! What books are the holidays interrupting?

I spent most of June with The Recognitions, so I am looking forward to reading some shorter novels, such as Disappearance and Small Remedies (for the group challenge).

Working on Watt for the Group Challenge. I think this is my 3d Beckett for the GC and I've had enough.
On audio, still moving slowly through Ulysses. Am past the halfway mark.

The next couple of weeks I'll be travelling through southeastern Europe, ending in Greece for a week of sailing. I expext plenty of time to read and take a box of books with me in the car, among which some (I suppose) easy-reads from the list: Cost, Rabbit Run, On Beauty, The Book of Daniel, The Wasp Factory, A Gate at the Stairs and The Art of Fielding.

trying to motivate myself to get through the last 100 pages of Animal's People and hoping they aren't as tedious as the first 200+...

I'm starting Hammett's The Glass Key. I've read several by him and shouldn't be disappointed.

Reading The Glass Key too, and at the moment it feels weaker than other Hammetts I have read.

Also in the middle of The Last World for Read All challenge, and it's a bit odd. I'm not too convinced but keep on reading...

I've gotten Midnight's children and Heart of darkness from the library.

I'm currently listening to Cat's Cradle by Vonnegut and have The Maltese Falcon audiobook on deck.

>6 Simone2: That sounds like an amazing trip! I'm still haunted by last year's reading of The Wasp Factory ...

I finished A Tale of Love and Darkness finally. Now onto The Valley of the Bones, the seventh book in A Dance to the Music of Time.

Another slow start to the month for me, but now I'm done with Bel-Ami I'm going to start The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay along with the latest Proust installment. Sodom and Gomorrah

Closing in on the end of The Rainbow (hope there's a pot of gold there). Started Sodom and Gomorrah and Alamut. Enjoying them both immensely in the early going.

I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov - this is maybe the 4th time I've attempted to read it, and this time it is completely grabbing my attention so fingers crossed that this time I will actually finish it.

I just got back from a weeks vacation, not quite managing to read a book a day (the niece and nephew required attention). I finished Small Remedies, Waterland, Mother's Milk, Blaming, and The Invention of Curried Sausage.

I've picked up The Feast of the Goat again after starting it last year. It's not an easy read, but it's fascinating - can't imagine why I dropped it; I'm loving every page of it!

I've finished with The Moor's Last Sigh, which was a fun read. Now moving onto All the Pretty Horses, which I've been looking forward to reading for ages.

I'm reading Look Homeward, Angel. So far I'm struck by all the lengthy descriptions of food. It makes me hungry.

Tackled The Engineer of Human Souls by Skvorecky, originally for the Read All challenge but even if it was not needed for that, it was definitely worth reading.

The Mandarins by Simone de Beauvoir; it is both delighting and disappointing me far more than expected.

I've just finished Red Harvest, good but so deadly. I have been making some progress on Infinite Jest and will be trying to finish this seemingly infinite book this month.

Reading Professor Martens' Departure for the group challenge. On audio, the endless Ulysses continues.

I read All the Pretty Horses today, which was terrific.

Hoping my next list book will be The House with the Blind Glass Windows... though the library isn't cooperating with that plan. The book arrived from interlibrary loan, but the staff can't seem to figure out where they put it.

I'm reading Daniel Deronda by George Eliot, my first one by her, and it is extremely good so far. One of those books where you know it is going to be fantastic from page one.

I am reading Cranford by Gaskell and will start Notes From the Underground soon.

I'm working on Amelia by Fielding and am completely up to date on Clarissa. I'm actually quite enjoying Clarissa, but will still be glad when I finish around October and am then able to read other books on my morning bus ride without having to get my 'Clarissa letters' out of the way first. :)

>31 QuartInSession: What's your method? As many as you can read on your commute, or a certain goal per day?

I read it a long time ago--long enough to have forgotten the details--and I think I should reread.

33QuartInSession
Jul 23, 2014, 1:25 pm

ipsoivan - I'm reading the letters on the days they were written, since I feel like that allows me to tackle it in manageable chunks and not get too discouraged by the size of it. For example, if there's a group of letters that go July 23, 23, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, I would read the first six on July 23 and leave the 24th til the 24th.

Impressed that you are thinking about a re-read!

Jul 23, 2014, 4:40 pm

That is a great way to do it, and yes, I did love that book. I had the benefit of studying it with a very enthusiastic professor who got all of our class quite excited about it.

That might be the only way I can get through Clarissa. I loathed Pamela when I had to read it for university.

Oh, Pamela is truly awful. Clarissa is so much better, and a good thing too.
