This thread is for discussion of The Dog by Joseph O'Neill.

35% through this one which has only bad reviews on amazon.com and one very positive one here on LT. So far my impression is that Joseph O'Neill writes very well, but hasn't really anything to say in this book. What I read so far could as well have been printed in shorter form in some lifestyle magazine.
I'd say no winner, no SL, added to the list as one of the "easier" reads along with the Ferris ad maybe the Fowler (and probably the Nicholls?).

Some amazon reviewers mention his earlier book Netherland, saying that that one is really great, I'll put it on my WL.

Finished it and liked it more than I should have seeing the many negative reviews elsewhere. I bought Netherland and will try to read it this month as well to see if "The Dog" is really just a shallow copy of a greater earlier book.

I've finished my compare-read of Netherland which was longlisted in 2008, so I put that review also on my Booker thread. I understand the critic better now, but I still quite like The Dog, although I wouldn't put it on the SL if I were a jury member.
