At this time of year, many of us think about trying to fight off the depressing messages of excessive holiday consumption with a dollop of giving. Would suggest to our group that if you have spare books lying around, send a few to the Women's Prison Book Project.

Check out the organization here: http://www.wpbp.org/

I have donated a lot of books to prisons, and most will not take hard cover books (that's noted in WPBS's info, but just in case you don't notice it).

Could individuals in this group manage to send 100 book before the end of the year?

I lost my personal library earlier this year and don't have any "spare" books right now, but they are also asking for cash donations to help with postage, and I can help there.

Here are the types of books prisoners are requesting:

The most requested topics include drug and alcohol recovery issues, English and Spanish language dictionaries, any contemporary fiction in Spanish, fiction and non–fiction by people of color, queer fiction and non–fiction, abuse issues, health, arts and crafts and mystery/horror novels.

>2 JackieCarroll: I'm so sorry you lost your personal library! Thank you for helping in whatever ways you can.

FWIW, the 100 book challenge is just a suggestion, and I don't propose we keep track (though if people want to post titles they've sent, that's fine by me); we have 700 members in this group, so seemed fairly modest number of books.

Thanks for the reminder! I missed their 20th Anniversary Party last month, but I do bring them books and other supplies at least once a year (they're local here in Minneapolis). And yes, postage is their biggest expense, so $$ donations towards that are always welcome.

Thanks for mentioning this organization! I will keep it in mind when I "cull the herd."

What a great idea. My library is big and unorganized with to read books intermingled with ones already read. One day I actually will dive in and clean it out, and the paperbacks will go here.
