Fascinating on so many counts, thanks very much for bringing this to our attention. I bought recently another batch of old sci-fi and there is one title by Offutt, My lord barbarian. I'm sure it will be more interesting to read with this background in mind.

Thanks, lennynero, for bringing this to a wider - well, more sympathetic - audience than that of the NY Times. Those of us who write erotic material will recognise many of the mental conflicts Offutt experienced, and having them exposed posthumously by a sensitive person is very welcome. I love the way he concealed his material behind other books on his shelves. It's a shame he felt so guilty, and we owe a big debt to his son for so boldly 'outing' his father in this memoir. My guess is that most pseudonymous writers of erotica - who must surely leave traces of their work - are far less lucky in having such liberated literary executors.
