I'm surfing the groups today and had just been talking to my family about 'odd things used as bookmarks' so had to visit this group.
I'm an artist and the PR person at my local library. I also have a mind that doesn't stop!
Are you creative folk? Have you heard about the artist trading card movement? People recycle playing cards, or cut paper of their own then paint, stamp, write, photocopy... etc. a limited edition of 12 or so cards apiece, then trade.
Would you be willing to start such a bookmark project with me?
I think the only limitation would be that the bookmark would fit and stand upright in a holder with a 3-inch diameter and be of such material as would not damage a book.
Front side, pure decoration/writing. Back side about you, your books, contact information only if you want. Promoting our enjoyment of LibraryThing too, of course, and your local library.
What I'm envisioning would be members adding handmade bookmarks to their collections, people with library connections taking the traded handmade bookmarks to the libraries. (Maybe people with library connections get two bookmarks from each participant?) One bookmark each to any interested person at that library, recyclable back to that library.
We could be the library version of Post Secret. Anyone game?

Sure, I'm game. I used to be a rubber stamper, and made all my own cards. Then I went into beading, then embroidery. Hump, I should be able to make some very cool bookmarks to trade.

Well I crochet a lot and could possibly do some nice crochet & paper bookmarks. I'll experiment a little and see. Sounds like fun.

So tell me a little about the handmade bookmark project, I'm very interested! I make bookmarks out of recycled pages from discarded library books. I make paper from the discards and add flower petals and seeds so they can even be planted in the spring. Let me know what this bookmark project entails, mine take a lot of time to create so I need a lot of notice!
