Vivian and Kay clearly had some kind of relationship or connection during the war, as seen through Vivian's great anxiety in returning a plain gold band to Kay in 1947. What do you think this connection is? What's the deal with that ring?

Have only read Chap. 1-3.
I feel that Kay lost her great love during WWII - it is not clear how. I believe that ring is a symbol of that relationship. Somehow, I am under the impression that Viv was attacked, maybe raped. Viv makes a statement that she was very grateful to Kay, but that by remembering Kay, Viv remembers a horrible time.

I think Kay feels lost in the first three chapters. Vivian has found her love in Reggie. I also believe that Kay may have lost the love of her life. Vivian seems quite reserved with Reggie in these first three chapters but she is in love.
