I've tagged my books as Family History, Local History, Research or a combination of those. I particularly enjoy books that give a flavour of life in the times and places my ancestors lived. My favourites in this category would be Gillian Tindall The Fields Beneath and The Rise and Fall of the Victorian Servant by Pamela Horn.

I've used the tag Family Tree for any books I purchased in pursuit of my family history. (It tells me what shelf to look on to find the book.) That includes history books in which ancestors or relatives get a mention.

Can anyone suggest a book that would help me get a better idea of life in the Birmingham (England) area
from around 1850? Good historical fiction would be fine, if it included people from various strata of society.

This site helps you search the IGI by date and place.

It's a good way to find all the siblings of an ancestor.

Sorry Myshelves, don't know much about Birmingham, but as a place that grew up in the industrial revolution would Mrs Gaskells works based on Manchester be any help? North and South or Mary Barton

Not sure. One thing I'm interested in is how people got around, and how far they'd travel. How did they meet the spouse from another town?
I think the canals played a big role around Brum.
I'd prefer to find something about, or set, there if possible.

Thanks!
