How do I add tags to my books? When I look at the book, it looks like there are multiple tags listed (I did not add any), but when I look at my stats, it shows that almost all of my books do not have tags. I was hoping that there is an easy way to add the tags. Thanks.

You can do it from the edit page or on the Your Books page. To get to the edit page for a book, click on the pencil icon at the right side of the book's entry on the Your Books page. To edit it on the Your Books page you need to go to a style, one of the letters at the top, that has tags as a column and double-click on the column. You can also change the columns for each style by using the Settings button at the top of the page.

You can also add tags from the main page of your books. Look for the module that says "Your book information". You'll see a section for Tags with an edit link. Just click there and add tags without even leaving the page.

Welcome...
There are many places to add tags here; as well as those two mentioned above you can add tags right from the 'add books' page too - before you search for the book there is a 'tags to add' box right under the search box, or once you have found the book if you click the 'show quick edit' you can add, edit, fix tags to the book.
Otherwise in your edit book page or in your catalogue - if you have tags as a column.
Easy peasy...

The tags you mention on the main book page are the tags other people have added to that book. In your catalogue or in the your book information box you will see your tags for the book (once you have added some).

it would be great it i could just tick a box to assign the tags other members have already suggested, and then just edit afterwards if needed as it would save a lot of typing.
is this possible???
is this possible???

>7 CronullaPreschool: That's one thing that's not going to happen. The owner/creator of LT believes that pushing people to come up with their own tags will improve the quality of the tags.

There's a 'tag auto-complete' feature (at least I think it's on LT and not just on my browser) where when you have used a tag once you just have to type three letters from it and you'll be presented with a drop-down of related tags to chose from. I find this incredibly convenient.

Can I create my own tag?

>10 TheBookRoom: Just type it :) The tags here are not predefined and do not function as a list of things to chose from. If you want to create tag "where did I find this?" or "how this got published?", more power to you :)

>6 MsMaryAnn: Access denied, 10 years later — link rot at its finest. This site has alot of potential, but somebody needs to bring it out of the 2010s

>13 Alexcs114: Those links were added by a user 10 years ago. There can be no surprise that they may no longer work (or if they worked that they would still bu useful). The site has existed for almost 20 years now. Talk posts from several years ago are still available, and can be a useful archive, but nobody is going around updating them. I don't know why you would expect that. The post before yours was from 2022.

>14 MarthaJeanne: I thought this was recent because I was led here from one of the other FAQ pages I stumbled across on one of the parts of the wiki - my apologies. Still getting used to navigating here

>13 Alexcs114: Wiki help pages have changed url since 2015. Unless you expect the person who posted to come back and can edit it, you're better off just using the help menu at the top right corner of every page. It is context-sensitive, meaning it will by default open a help page related to where you are at ATM. Eg when I click it now from Talk, it opens the Talk-related help page. Use search if looking for something different. Searching for 'tags' will lead you to https://www.librarything.com/concepts and https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/Tagging as a start.
And thank you very much, but we like LT much better than either 2010s or 2020s typical internet fare. It is everything everyone hoped the internet would be in the 90s, meaning bringing you all the computing wonders, but ad and distraction-free :D

>15 Alexcs114: If you find Wiki pages that are out of date, you can update them. They are mostly user created, and it is always a good idea to check when a page was last updated.

BTW The basic information from 10 years ago is still true.
It is easy to add your tags to your books in several places. The exact details may have changed - some of them very recently, but you should be able to find the places easily.
Tags on the work are the tags other people have entered. You cannot change them, nor can you transfer them to your entry. Tim wants you to decide what tags you want on the book, not copy from others.

Thank you all! TBH I wasn't expecting much of a reply if any so this is certainly a good surprise. I'll definitely try and track down that wiki page to see if I can update it. The design of the website isn't bad, just a bit of a learning curve, since there's not very many left like this these days. Reminds me alot of the old forums I used to use as a kid, before I developed a bit of a twitter addiction lol
Not sure if you guys run the website or who does, but I noticed a bug when catologing my books that you might want to be aware of — if you go to the "no tag" section, select a book, tag it (with the power tagger), and then go to tag a different book with a different tag, the original book stays selected (even if you press deselect) and ends up getting tagged, so you have to reload the page anytime you want to tag books using a different tag, unless you want them getting all jumbled up. Also, you guys should sell "Ex Libris" bookplates on the store, that'd be neat — and maybe like that library plastic wrap some places put on their nice hardcovers to protect them? Just a thought — again, no clue if this is the right place to report bugs or write down suggestions, but might as well write them down b4 I forget
Otherwise, this is awesome — makes it super easy to organize my books by genre and then alphabetically by offer last name, which is what I was looking to do to start out with. It being ad free is awesome, I must admit! You don't see that much these days — especially compared to goodreads and the other corporate conglomerate sites that dominate the internet now

Ad free and free to use. Yes, except we have already roped you into being part of the helpers community here. Welcome. (for me it has been an 18 year learning curve so far,)

>19 Alexcs114: ooh, you found the Power Edit bug! It doesn't always maintain the selections after making a tag change, but it often does. I make it a habit of always double-checking the selections after a few run-ins with it.
I use a touchscreen nearly exclusively these days, and the catalogue tends to be extra sensitive to the "drag down for page refresh" gesture, which can make the power edit selections behave a bit oddly, too.
There are plans to make that page more friendly for touchscreens and narrow/high zoom browser windows, so i expect any bugs with Power Edit to be acknowledged but not fixed until the update is ready. (Which could be anything from a few months away to a year, but I believe it's in the dev queue, since the Work page updates have been pushed.)

All the recent replies on this thread I've seen have been other users. LT staff will have an L icon next to their name
