While we're here it seems silly not to grab the chance to ask for help with those awkward relatives who just won't come out of hiding.
For me it's Joh COLES. He died in Gloucestershire UK in 1844, the 1841 census says he wasn't born in that county, but I can't find a way to identify him amongst all the births/marriages for his name at the time I estimate they would have taken place. Any ideas?

Do you have the death cert?
It would give you his age (or someone's best guess),
and occupation. With luck, the informant may have been the widow or someone else whose name would give you a clue.
I rarely have luck with death certs. The coroner kept "sitting on" my relatives, so he was the informant. In one case it was a neighbor!
I'd complain about English death certs not having enough info, but I have to remember that we didn't have certs in NY back then. :)
