Besserland This takes place in the USSR and in Germany (with only a very short stop in Vienna).
Jewish immigrants in the late 1980s. The book wasn't bad, just boring.

I just read How My Summer Went Up in Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski, which was a gift, so I'm using it for the "book chosen by someone else" square. It was cute, though probably something I would not have picked up on my own. Luckily, it also works for this month's RandomCAT!

I used Coventry by Helen Humphreys for 'A Book Centered Around a Major Historical Event' as the descriptions of the bombing of Coventry on November 14, 1940 are so vividly described in this book.

>3 DeltaQueen50: That looks interesting. My library doesn't have it, so I'll have to pass for now.

What happens in London The male main character is a Russian translator, so this counts for language. Otherwise not worth reading.

>4 MarthaJeanne: Coventry is well worth keeping an eye out for. It's a short novel of less than 200 pages but her descriptions of the devastation that occured in that one night is memorable.

>6 DeltaQueen50: We were there just a short time ago (http://www.librarything.com/topic/191124#5158299) so it would really interest me, but both the eBook and the real one cost more than I care to spend on fiction.

Foundation has lots of men, but the few women almost present don't do anything.

I've finished All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr for the "based on a major historical event" block. That leaves me with just 4 more blocks.

The stripping of the altars is my June HistoryCAT book a little late. That is a first Bingo on this card.

I've just finished At the Water's Edge by Sara Gruen and decided to use it as my "with a mythical creature" square because the Loch Ness monster plays an important part in the story. If we find out before the end of the year that the monster is not a myth, then I'll change this to the square "where an animal is of importance". LOL!

>11 clue: Haha, love it! Works either way! :)

>8 MarthaJeanne: Ha ha, absolutely concur with your assessment of Foundation.

It's really horrible rereading Asimov this year parallel to recent Science Fiction. Back a few decades ago I got a lot of enjoyment out of his books, but they don't measure up to today's standards.

Witch Child has lots of prophecies and portents. The witch ones, the puritan ones, the native American ones... I do not recommend it.

For "Set in a Country Other Than My Own" I have read The Shape of Water by Andrea Camilleri. This is the first of a series and, yes, I'm hooked!

Shibus größter Wunsch takes place in India.

Junípero Serra quotes lots of letters.

I've read Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant by Roz Chast for my "Outside My Comfort Zone" block.

For A Book With a Mythical Creature, I have completed A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan. A fun read.

And, I have used Big Hard Sex Criminals as a Book Outside my Comfort Zone, even though I did end up enjoying this graphic novel.

I'm using The Bloomsbury cookbook for LGBTQ. This is not your ordinary cookbook, but rather a book about the Bloomsbury group centering more on food and life in general than on their art and literature. The recipes are good, but really an added bonus to the rest of it.
Oh, yes, it seems that many of them were in and out of various beds without much attention to gender.

Completed Ella Minnow Pea for the language square. I've had this on my to read list for several years, so glad I finally got to it!

I'm counting Biblical Exegesis and the Formation of Christian Culture as completely outside my comfort zone. This is a book for specialists, and I'm just not. But I got a lot out of it and am very proud that I made it through. (It had a bookmark at page 70, so I tried before without success.)
27DeltaQueen50
For "A Book Chosen By Someone Else" I read Before the Fact by Francis Iles. My brother's choice, and now he will get his turn with the book!
28DeltaQueen50
I seem to be flying through my second card, I just completed "A Book That Is A Genre Bender" with Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch.

I took some time deciding how to categorize this, and finally decided on 'Inspired by another work of fiction'. Tolkien wrote it in the process of trying to write an introduction to an edition of Macdonald's Golden Key

This weekend I finished Fables, Vol 2: Animal Farm for "A book based on a fairlytale or a myth" and Go Ask Alice for "A book that is completely outside of your comfort zone".
