A very nice book with illustrated end papers. Sadly mine had an ink smear which you can see in on Pic #9 (List of the Plates). I hope this isn't on all of them.

>1 cu29640: very nice. Thanks for sharing. Regarding the ink smear you can always return it for another copy.

Didn't even notice the ink smear. Part of the facsimile? Well, up to you if you're going to return in. Myself, I would keep it. Adds character :)

I'm horrified to notice there are creases in the gutter, pic seven. I have this in several of the books in my first EP order (sorry to beat a dead horse) and I've been wondering if their DLEs suffer the same as I'm tempted to take the DLE plunge soon. Maybe it's a trick of the camera? Maybe it's less noticeable in person and only here pronounced by the camera. Maybe it's just my OCD.

Otherwise, wow. This is one great example of what sets a DLE apart.

The creases in pic 7 are not noticeable in person. That's a stiff piece of card stock pasted in along with thick transparent paper...hence it probably makes the gutter look a bit less tidy than usual especially since I am holding it back for the pic.

Do gutter creases imply something? I see them often on Folio LE's with thick paper as well.

One image had a bit of sticky on top that caught the cover page. Seems like they apply the adhesive, then lay the plate down.

EP as usual was super nice and is replacing. Wagner's Ring cycle comes tomorrow...amazingly quick. It has a lot of the same features as Alice in Wonderland so I imagine they ran them close together at the bindery.

Please post pics of Wagner as well!

I returned my first EP copy of Dracula (Greatest Books Collection) because of many gutter creases which were very noticeable. I received my replacement two days ago and noticed the same gutter creases throughout the book. It looks like the batch of Dracula books are all gutter creased and I don't know if I should send the second copy back because I may keep getting the same gutter creased Dracula.

I returned Wagner. I have to limit my purchases and production of Wagner was identical to Alice in Wonderland. Same paper, etc. And its heavy and large...so I wanted to wait for the next gotta have book.

cu29640: I don't know what gutter creases implies in a bookbinder sense, but I'm unhappy that I can't yet get a copy of some EP books without them. It seems that entire runs of EP titles have them, based on my limited research and exposure (haven't seen them in a FS book yet). I'm not insulting the DLE above. It's beautiful. I'm just hoping that I don't find creases if I decide to take the DLE plunge. Regardless, thank you for posting such great pictures. The EP website often does nothing to tempt me toward DLE, but these pics certainly do.

Tolkienfan: I'm on my third round of Fight Club and View From the Summit. The two prior rounds are creased badly. The third is en route. Other than the creases, all copies are nice and I love EP, which adds to the disappointment.

That looks really nice. Even the leather doesn't look dodgy :) Only comment is that a couple of the tipped in illustrations don't look very well glued in (shadows at the edges as if they are curling away from the page)?

Edit: Illustrations are tipped-in, glued along the top. No case to answer.

Well, I guess I'm not the only one who has experienced a book with multiple creased pages and now returning my second copy with hopes that my third copy will be defective free. I love these books, but am frustrated with having to return the same title back twice.

>14 Tolkienfan:
And under normal circumstances the company should be very disappointed at the expense of all the returns (not just postage but presumably the production costs of the returned book which then cannot be resold). But clearly EP has built in very large margins on these overpriced items and returns probably barely make a dent in the overall program profitability. So I wouldn't expect them to take any actions to fix the issue.

>14 Tolkienfan: unless no one accepted any defects. Massive returns would have a positive impact on quality control at EP.

Well... Looks like I will be $400 poorer. I have >1 cu29640: to blame for that.

>15 UK_History_Fan:

I do wonder if most of the returns just get sent back out again to less fussy/discerning customers, and only the really bad ones head for recycling.

There is something very wrong, based on the number of people posting on here that are getting faulty books. From seeing the posts here, I get the impression that a high percentage of EPs current output has some level of defects (acceptable to some buyers, not to others). I guess a combination of high margins and high level of tolerance from customers means they are at some kind of "sweet spot" when it comes to making money.

Seems odd, though, as one would think less sloppy workmanship wouldn't cost much more than sloppy workmanship percentage-wise.

Hah, I know right?! I wasn't seriously considering this book until now. I already have Alice in Wonderland from the 100 Greatest collection but just look at the quality on this... wow.

The illustrations are only glued at the top, hence they move at the bottom. Otherwise the page wouldn't flip as well.

Yep, same as Dracula DLE, War of the Worlds DLE, et al. I think that's what they refer to as illustrations 'laid in'.

>22 Studedoo:

I think it is actually "tipped-in", rather than "laid-in" (that's where the picture isn't attached at all). Only bonding a narrow strip along the top does seem to be the common way to handle this, though. Looking back at the pictures I can now see that is how it is done.

Hello all,

Well I just received my third copy of Dracula as a replacement for the first two because of the pages having multiple creases in the gutter area. This third copy is the best I have received and plan on keeping it. It isn't perfect like many of my other EP books, but I will be reading it and then store it on my bookcase in my library, so it's not like a limited DLE that I've invested a lot of money and want it to be a perfect, flawless and not allow anyone to touch it.

It's interesting that Dracula is not on the website, save for the DLE.

25Tolkienfan

Yeah, that is interesting and I also only see the DLE copy. The only way I was getting this copy of Dracula is because I am getting titles from the 100 Greatest Books Collection. I guess all the titles that are available through different EP collections don't sell individually on the EP site.

Speaking of Alice...Slightly off topic but the Morgan Library in New York had a recent exhibit (closed today, Oct. 12th): Alice: 150 Years in Wonderland. The exhibit is online: http://www.themorgan.org/exhibitions/online/alice

This is a great forum. As recommended, Just got the 150th anniversary annotated Alice in Hardback with incredible artwork and scholarly annotations. So as I read Alice, I will also read this great book ($21 on Amazon)

The FS is also releasing a limited editon Alice.

http://www.foliosociety.com/book/ALA/alice-in-wonderland

It's $900 :O
Very nice illustrations, but I feel like there have been so many editions of Wonderland that I'm Aliced-out. If I could have one edition, it would be the LEC. First, it's letterpress, and nothing beats letterpress! Secondly, it has the Tenniel illustrations which are iconic. Thirdly, it is signed by Alice! Of course, it is THOUSANDS of dollars, so I doubt I'll ever own it. But I do dream of letterpress :)
