Lovers of opera the world over are today mourning the death of Luciano Pavarotti.
My earliest memories of him are of a recital at Lyric Opera of Chicago, when he dedicated the aria from Manon Lescaut, Dona non vidi mai, to general manager Carol Fox. (These were the years before he wore out his welcome here by his constant cancellations!) Such a glorious voice! One of those instantly recognizable - great technique, but, as important, great emotion, great passion, great lyricism.
