I finished this last week. Maya Angelou had a way of making even her prose sound poetic. I loved her descriptions of church services and tent revival meetings.
I kept wondering all the way through why this book has been challenged so much in school settings. Then I got to the last couple of chapters and the reason became apparent. Even though she handles the subject of her teen pregnancy tastefully, a lot of younger teens won't know what to do with this part of the book. I know I wouldn't have been ready to read this until my later teens, but some of my friends could have handled it earlier than that.
