As selected by jhowell, October's Deep South Book of the Month is The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks.

Contribute your reviews of this work before November 1 to win a chance to pick December's Book of the Month (November's selection will be made by the best reviewer of September's book)

In addition to contributing a review, feel free to discuss Hick's book here:

I just don't know what I am going to do with you folks -- you are so unenthusiastic. Well, I read Widow of the South (nevermind that it was my own selection) -- and I rather enjoyed it.

Some of the writing was very evocative and haunting -- just thinking about the slaughter on that battlefield, and the waste of life was overwhelming. The romantic relationship between Carrie and Zacarriah though was pretty unbelievable and the books Achille's heel in my opinion. Apparently, that creepy picture of her dead children still to this day hangs in Carnton. Interesting place to visit I imagine.

Anyway -- I may be the only person who read it so I am talking to myself. Hey self -- shut up.

I got it from the library and it is currently overdue. I anticipate reading and reviewing it by the end of next week.
