Newly discovered Hunchback of Notre Dame DLEs

Apparently the Danbury Mint UK still has copies of the Routledge 1888 EP DLE of The Hunchback of Notre Dame at 219 British Pounds which is below the original retail price of $400. They do not ship to the U.S. but if you know of a friend in the UK who will take delivery and ship it to you, then you can acquire this beautiful work. This is what I have done.

>2 jroger1: yes I was determined to have all known Victorian illustrated Routledge works by Hugo and Dumas including the two EP will not print : Man who laughs and Ninety-three (1888). There is one other large ornate work I am aware of titled "The Wandering Jew". But not by an author I know.

Danbury has 10 copies left. These are the last copies on the planet.

I do not have a friend in the UK who would ship this to me but I sure do WISH I did.

>7 katielouise: I am thrilled since, I have seen this spectacular work in the 1888 original which I have . Try working with OrenUK who is on this forum and is a book dealer. Perhaps you can order it as I did direct from Danbury and ship it to him. Pay him a fee and he will ship it the best rate (as he counseled my friend). Even with shipping and fee to Oren your cost is well below secondary market.

So these are EP books? They look like the EP DLE.

9>It's Dan Bury Mint's UK website which is a sister company of EP which is both owned by MBI Inc. I tried purchasing a DLE from them about a year ago but as mentioned in the above post, they can only ship to a UK address. They've had these books for a while now actually, more than a year for sure (I was going to purchase The works of Homer).

If one is really desperate I suppose you can use a forward shipping company in the UK, the only risk is if the book is defective then you might be SOL.

Ok you have my interest... What the heck is a fwd shipping company and how does it work and what is the cost?

11> Apologies but I may be using the wrong term, but it's basically a shipping company that you can use their address to have an item shipped to and once they receive the item they will ship it back to you. I've never used such a service but I know some people on other forums that has. So for me since I live in Canada and a few US companies might not ship a product here I might use https://www.shipito.com/ just as an example.

Correction on >8 HugoDumas: above. Oren is not a book dealer. He sells on eBay just like most of us. He is to be trusted and will help you get this remarkable DLE.

I wouldn't say "most" of us are eBay sellers. I personally am not.

If only I'd known of OrenUK a few years ago when I was panting over a set of the Canterbury Tales DLE, at that time sold out at EP but still on offer at Danbury Mint/E.P. U.K. -I went back-and-forth with a (former?) forum member located near London on the thorny question of taking delivery for me and shipping on, but decided against it because of prohibitive shipping costs "across the pond" :-((

Indeed, I remember Canterbury Tales DLE still being available on Danbury Mint about a year and a half ago. Anyhow, next time - I'm around.

Received new Hunchback of Notre Dame from UK. It is a spectacular breathtaking set at only $335 U.S. plus shipping (original retail was $400). I now have all the Routledge Victorian Hugo and Dumas sets (5 novels, 16 volumes). In my opinion this set has the most ornate cover and slipcase of the five; gorgeous green slightly lighter than Toilers. To my knowledge Danbury Mint UK still has 8 copies left.

I am grateful to OrenUK on this forum for bringing this to my attention. Don't pass this by (eBay price is $619). If you do not have a friend in UK to take delivery, OrenUK will help you for a very modest fee. If you want me to post pictures I will.

I searched Danbury....unfortunately no other hidden treasures. We are lucky finding these OOP sets.. Three Musketeers and Hunchback of Notre Dame in the last couple of months.

Can you post pics of the 3 books side by side? I'm just curious to see how they match and size comparison.

I also want to thank OrenUK for helping me acquire "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" DLE, from the Danbury Mint UK, over here in the States.

I was surprised how quickly it arrived at my door since it had to be shipped to OrenUK first, then on to me! LOL

>23 booklover2k: same here...about a few weeks. The book is spectacular. What truly convinced me to get it was after reading the Folio Society book "Chartres : the making of a Miracle", which also discussed the saving of Notre Dame as well as Henry James work on Mount St. Michel, Chartres and Notre Dame (available in Franklin leather) Notre Dame de Paris is a homage to Gothic architecture and a plea to preserve it (some forces wanted to destroy it). This work which includes the wonderful Quadimodo story is part of his triptych on extraordinary heroes fighting social injustice. Nevertheless Hugo is credited with the restoration and preservation of Notre Dame.

For those still interested Hugo's Hunchback of Notre Dame EP DLE is still available at Danbury Mint UK. Here is the new URL with some pictures. I will try to post some additional pictures in future. Cost is still 219 pounds, which is below original retail ($400) even with postage.

With the recent ruination of Notre Dame due to fire, the glorious Easton Press DLE of the Routledge (1888) Hunchback of Notre Dame seems even more precious today (especially if you have visited the cathedral), with its close to 100 quality illustrations including the cathedral and scenes of Paris.

In 1831, the novel Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo, published in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame successfully brought the cathedral much needed attention. Hugo embedded a significant treatise on gothic architecture in the novel in his quest to save Notre Dame and other cathedrals such as Chartres. Notre Dame was in near ruination from neglect, indifference and abuse during the French Revolution and the Protestant Reformation (“Truth banished beauty as an infidel” - Will Durant). In 1844 King Louis Philippe ordered that the church be restored. Over a 25 year period it was indeed gloriously restored. Many credit Victor Hugo’s novel with saving Notre Dame. I suspect the novel was less about Quasimodo saving Esmeralda and more about saving this glorious cathedral.

There are a couple of copies left on eBay for those who still want a copy of this most beautiful edition.
