Bible scholar Bart D. Ehrman cites things similar to this as to why he's gone from being very religious to becoming highly agnostic. He talks about the idea that "god works in mysterious ways" just doesn't cut it when you see things such as starving or molested children... innocent people being killed in horrible ways and so on. God has a plan for everything just didn't pass muster for him any longer. What plan could justify these kinds of things.
