Doesn't say it's limited but quite pricey at $350..and yes yes it also does not state who the translator is, but I suppose I could google it.

definitely overpriced for what it is.

>2 ramboknows: Yes, as much as I love the classics I will pass. I much rather get their previous DLE which contained both the Iliad & Odysey. I guess I missed it but the spine does say it is translated by George Palmer.

I will wait for FS to have it in DLE format one day. Well, let's hope they will do it.

>4 ramboknows: I've been suggesting it now for a while to match the Aeneid. If they do I would hope they try better in the illustration side as I wasn't a fan of the illustrated plates in the Aeneid.

>JuliusC I hear you but I love my FS LE Aeneid with fresco illustrations and texture paper they used. The entire book was made by German and Italian FS contractors. It gave me a lot of reading pleasure.

>1 JuliusC: "it also does not state who the translator is" Um, it states quite clearly on the spine that it is translated by Palmer (George Herbert). I bought a copy of the original edition (in cloth) earlier this year for well under $100.

>kdweber Was that contemporary translation or archaic one like most of the EP translations of the classical books.

>7 kdweber: That is correct see post >3 JuliusC: :)

>9 JuliusC: Oops, sorry I missed reading the end of your post. EP looks like they did a nice job reproducing the illustrations.
>8 ramboknows: The Palmer translation is neither archaic nor contemporary. My preference for translator would be either Fagles or Lattimore.

The Aeneid is the only FS LE I own. Most of them are too expensive, but this one was reasonable. FS published Fagles's translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey in two volumes in the late 1990s. They were not LEs, but were quarter-bound in leather and look great shelved with my EPs. The Odyssey is widely available on the secondary market for under $100, but the Iliad is more elusive.
Caution: FS recently reprinted these volumes, but the reprints are quarter-bound in buckram instead of leather.

>12 jroger1: Of course EP comes out with this, with the beautiful Wyeth pictures, after I swore to myself I'm not buying another fancy Iliad or Odyssey unless they have facing pages with the ancient Greek.
14ramboknows
>kdweber Completely agreed. Fagles translation was the reason I enjoyed reading the Aeneid DLE from FS

>jroger1 They are very expensive and it took me two years to get the ones I really liked. Fortunately, for my finances they currently do not have anything I like.

>12 jroger1: The FS editions are quite nice. I picked up both volumes earlier this year (September) for ~$50 each. If you buy these, avoid the first printing which had a tacky/sticky leather problem.

Yes, it's the Odyssey that has the sticky feeling. It's mostly gone away now but still feels a little "different." I remember reading a post in LT's Folio group that said FS had a problem with their green dye during this period, so other books might have been affected too.

Of the two new releases, the Dore seems superior in every way and for only $50 more. EP and their random pricing....

Interesting. I've always wondered if there's something up with green dye.
The only time I've seen leather dye fade overnight (in this case morocco spine labels), the labels were green.
It was a 3 volume set and they all went gray. The labels below that were red, and they are still nice and bright.
I've also seen more lightly to heavily sunned green leather bound books than any other color leather.

>13 katielouise: Might I suggest Chester River Press' edition. It has the greek translation on one side and Alexander Popes translation on the other. Here's a nice review busywine made on his blog http://booksandvines.com/2012/02/09/the-iliad-and-odyssey-by-homer-chester-river...
It's impressive in size at almost 15"

>19 JuliusC: I have seen and coveted that but I think they're all sold out and I can't find any on the secondary market. I would happily buy it if I ever came across an available one.

>12 jroger1: Yes, and I believe the reason for printing them in buckram instead of leather was that the 90s version was sticky

>20 katielouise: You can find it new in the original shrinkwrap for $150 in the Amazon marketplace (US).

>22 kdweber: Well I hadn't looked on Amazon. Thank you! Hopefully everyone else isn't going to jump on it before I suss out whether or not I can buy it right now (what with the eleventy billion OTHER things I've bought lately).

Beautifully done book, will be on my list for review.

>25 George_Allen: I personally would not spend that amount of money if I don't like how the book looks. Isn't that what were paying for at this price? Other wise we could get the same translation for cheaper. Unless of course the illustration is what's drawing you in.
