175. Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow I was so looking forward to this but was somewhat disappointed.

Set in New York City during the early 1900s with a mix of Real people such as Pierpont Morgan, Houdini, Henry Ford with fictional characters. But the main story line was sit around this black musician that had his car trashed and just wants justice. This was an easy read but just not sure what the point was to this book.

176. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark

A teacher Jean Brodie takes a set of set 6 girls under her wing to teach them what she "Jean Brodie" is important in life and her view of things since she reminds everyone all the time that she is in her PRIME. Miss Brodie is involved in a love triangle with 3 different men at the school that she involves the girls in. At the end Mis Brodie is betrayed by one of her own girls and is fired from the school thus ending her PRIME. This was a quick easy entertaining audiobook that I was able to start and finish in an afternoon.

177. Candide by Voltaire

I found a decent audio form of the book and was about to start and finish in an afternoon. Not really going to give a review of this book since I cant add anything that has already been said and most everyone already knows the plot. My thoughts on this book is we often set our minds on something or someone and spend all this time sometimes even years trying to obtain this one thing and once we get it that thing, situation or even that person turns out to be a great disappointment.

178. Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee

I listen to this book on audio and since the writer was the one reading his own book it was great because it was like sitting down with your Grandfather and him just talking about his childhood.

This is a coming of age story of a boy that grows up in the early 1900 during WWI in a large family 4 sisters and 3 other brothers in a small village outside of London. His father moved his wife with his 4 daughter from his first marriage and then with the 3 boys they had together to a small village and then pretty much abandons them only showing up every so often to London.

This was a very easy to listen too and just felt like story time. Nothing earth changing.

That sounds like it might be quite a pleasant change of pace book. Some respite from what sometimes feels like the constant doom and gloom of the main list books.

Really the best way to describe it has a cozy listen too. At first I was like why are they having the old man read this book because he sounds like he is out of breath then I looked and he was the one that wrote the book so I was like well this is really cool. Just sit back and listen to Grandpa.

179. The Stanger by Albert Camus

A lot of thoughts on this little book. What to say about the main character Mersault? Shortly after his Mothers death he happens to get into a situation where he kills a man. When he is on trail it seems that he is more on trail for his feelings and emotions or lack of them the actual murder. The thought of just because you may not show the emotions that people think you should feel does that make you a bad person?

180. Baltasar and Blimunda by Jose Saramago

Set in Portugal in the 1711 the book has 3 main story lines: The 1st is a king that promises to build a convent if the queen conceives. the 2nd is a couple that falls in love Baltasar a former solider with only one hand and Blimunda that has the ability to see under the surface of things including people. The 3rd is a strange priest that building a flying machine that uses runs off of energy taken from the inner wills of dying people. During this time Baltasar and Blimunda becomes separated several times and Baltasar spends many years searching for Blimunda. After many years Baltasar and Blimunda find each other but Blimunda has lost her beauty and cranky.
Listening to this on audio and at times really had to pay attention to what was being said or I would get completely lost and have to rewind. The realism wasn’t that magical for me it was just kinda of meh so just glad I can tic this one off the list.

181. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

We have two main characters John Wheelwright and Owen Meany that grow up together. John is an only child to a single mother and his life time obsession is to find out who his father is, but his mother dies before revealing who the man is. Owen the more interesting character is a tiny little guy with a very usual voice that is very intelligent.

I didn’t mind John in his younger years but later one he turns into a bitter and angry man, but Owen he was just so unique and fascinating with his ideas of being an instrument of God and later on in college some of the things that he able to pull off and get away with.

I just couldn’t wait to get back to this book to see what will happen next a very delightful read and it will bring on the feels and yes tears (Im not ashamed).

Have you read Garp? Most people seem to like Owen Meany the best but Garp will always be my favourite.

182. Tender Is The Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Dr Diver marries his rich patient and trying to save her he in turns ruins himself in alcohol. At first glance the Divers appear to have it all a great marriage, living the life of leisure surrounded by many friends. While on the beach the Divers meet an American actress Rosemary that spends the summer with the Divers and there we see the cracks in the Divers marriage.
Any one that knows the story of Fitzgerald and Zelda will know that this book is about his marriage and himself. While the book was interesting it wasn’t anything near The Great Gasby.

183. The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Heminway

An old man goes over 80 days without catching anything and one day the old man decides he will catch something by going out further then all the other boats. Sure enough he catches a big fish that tows him a day or so from shore before the fight is over and the old man wins against the fish. Since the fish is so big instead of getting the fish on board of the boat he attaches him to the boat itself and begins to tow the fish in to shore. On the way back to the shore he has to fight off many sharks and by the time he reaches shore there is nothing left of the fish except the head, backbone and tail.

This one is a big surprise for me that I actually enjoyed this book at all but very much so. Im not a big out door type of person so a book about an old man catching a big fish just wasn't high on my list.
