Welcome to the 9th year of the challenge! We get lots of new people each year, and we know it can be difficult to "catch up". This thread is just the place for you! The info below will help you get started and make your experience here a good one.

First, where did we come from? Well, back in 2008, Cariola decided to start a group for folks who wanted to challenge themselves to read 75 books in a year. We were a small group, but loved our experience, so decided to do it again! Since then, I've made the yearly groups.

We're at bit of an amorphous organization. Members have jumped in to add features since. SqueakyChu runs the TIOLI challenge. Monthly themes are proposed by many of us - and some have carried over from year to year, like the Halloween read in October. If you've got an idea to try, propose it!

What the heck is a BB?

So most of us have teetering piles of books to be read, or TBRs. In fact, some are mountain-sized, others approaching black hole status! In spite of the fact that we've got so many books laying around to read, sometimes we open up somebody's thread and a book just pops out and demands to be added to the TBR. That's a book bullet, or BB!

How do I get info about the group?

There's a bunch of ways. First, we have some useful threads every year: the Message Board, Interesting Articles, In Memoriam, etc. It's a good idea to keep an idea on these.

We also keep two wiki pages. The Threadbook is an index to people's threads - perfect for finding folks' threads. Then there's the Group wiki, with links to important threads, group reads, and monthly themes.

How to survive and thrive in such a busy group?

At the beginning of each year there seems to be a hectic shake down when lots of threads are started and may overwhelm! My method is to read a few messages in many threads and hit the Star this Topic for ones which appeal. Then later when I feel overwhelmed I may "un-star". I don't worry about people coming on my thread and later disappearing for awhile. Real life does happen, too. Just have fun.

How to immensely add to the pleasure of this "75 Books" group...

If you ever have the chance, try to meet up in real life with other LTers near you or other LTers visiting your area. Book festivals are great places and dates to visit with each other. You'll never look back!

Just finished a book and want to start this year's challenge. Do I count it since most was read the last few days of December? And do I have to register again, since I don't see my name in the list?

>6 sjgoins: you can count the book for whichever year you want it to, but I would count it to this years challenge and start with a bang.
To get started just open a new thread topic on the '75 Books Challenge for 2016' group page, with your name in the thread title and start talking books :)

My ID is noellib and I'd like to know how to join the Group.
I love reading generally but lately have been reading mostly fiction - especially "Scandinavian noir" crime novels. Also enjoy non-fiction of most types - history, biographies, quirky travel books, politics, and current issues such as climate change, atheism vs. religion, etc. Some of my "reading" is done in the car - ie: books on CD, but mostly I read in bed!
Currently reading "Reykjavik Nights" by Arnaldur Indridason ( an Icelandic crime writer) .

>8 noellib: Welcome! At the top of this page just beneath 'Welcome to New Friends' it says 75 Books Challenge. Click on that and you will be on the group's home page. There is a place on the upper right to join the group.

On the group home page, just below where it says Administrator there is an option to Post a New Topic. Click on that to start your own thread. Put your user name in your thread title so we can find you.

There is an introduction thread where you can tell a bit about yourself and give the link to your thread once you've started it.

There are lots of other goodies on the home page - Drneutron (Jim) does an amazing job with lists of where everyone's threads are (the threadbook), group reads, topic threads, etc.

Welcome to the 75'ers! You're going to have fun!

>6 sjgoins: On the home page, check the box at the upper right of the screen. It will tell you if you are member of the group.

How do you reply to a comment to a specific person?

>11 crazeedi73: If you mean like I just did with your message, type a right-pointy-bracket and the message number. The system will automagically make it a link to that message.

Been a member since 2014, but really only used LibraryThing.com to keep track of my books, but I wanted to get a little more involved this year. Is the website mostly for libraries or are there a lot of individuals on here too? The whole website seems a little overwhelming and I really probably am not using it like I should. I guess for a Generation X girl, I am not as savvy as I hope I would be. Am I aging myself if I say i learned to type on an actual typewriter. Now that I have digressed from my original thought, the reason I post is to ask if there is a tutorial that helps someone maneuver through LibraryThing? I added myself to the 75 book challenge for 2016, but I noticed that some posts are so detailed with trackers, etc. Craving for that type of information. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Kimberly

There are mostly individuals here - there's also a LT for Libraries site that Tim and company use to market their products to libraries and organizations. I'd start with the help pages: look at the bottom left of each web page for a link.

As far as detail and trackers and such go, there's a wiki page we use to list instructions on how to do things in your posts that might help. It's at http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Basic_HTML_/_How_to_do_Fancy_Things_i...

Hope this helps! Feel free to PM me if you have other questions.

Not exactly new to the group but I've been away for a while so thought I would refresh my memory with a few tips from this thread and say hi. Hopefully I can get back into the swing of things fairly quickly :)

Hi Van!

This thread is used to introduce new folks to our group, so definitely the right place to ask questions. The best way to jump in is to create a thread from the group page that's yours and use that to track books. There are a bunch of examples in the group - feel free to pull from them to create the space you want!
