I've just set up this year's ANZAC Challenge for those interested in exploring literature from Australia and New Zealand.
To keep the pace doable with all the other challenges I've set it at two monthly intervals with a choice of up to 6 writers each time.

^Anyone feel like hosting Fantasy February this year? Give an old warbler a break? If so, PM me.

We were talking about The Destiny of the Republic last year the book about the life and times of President James Garfield - his early life, his out of nowhere nomination for the Presidency, his being elected president and then tragically being shot by a demented office seeker and then even more tragically being killed by more than incompentent medical treatment after the attack.

Well Public Broadcasting in America has come out with an "American Experience" documentary based on the book and it is being broadcast this week. (In New York they are showing it Tuesday night). It's called "Murder of a President" and the early word is good.

Here's a link:

Murder of a President

I'll be watching - or taping more likely as it's the same night as our F2F book Meetup

Are there any more group reads planned for this year (and I don't mean the challenge reads, but "regular" group and author reads)? I know there's a group read thread over in the 2016 Category Challenge but I'm not a member of that group anymore so I haven't kept tabs on that thread. I've looked around here in the 75'ers but not found a thread. If there is one, please point me to it, if not, does anyone have any interest in setting one up?
I'll admit I'm not the best at keeping up with group reads but I have a soft spot for them and would love to see more of them around.

>12 PawsforThought: I love group/paired reads, it's so much fun to be able to discuss a book with someone else as I go! I'd love to see a thread for people to set up group reads and look for reading buddies on particular books.

I post all the group reads on the wiki page for the group. The only one I have right now is In Cold Blood at http://www.librarything.com/topic/218310 except for the author/Pulitzer/etc challenges. If anything gets a thread, I'll add it.

Anybody can propose a group read - these mostly come from several people thinking of reading a book or an author at about the same time. Feel free to get something going if there's a book you'd like to share with someone!

>14 drneutron: But it's bit tricky to propose a group read if there's no general group read thread, isn't it? I mean, I guess people can propose them anywhere but it makes things easier to find if there's a designated spot for them. I checked and there was a group read thread for the 75'ers last year so I was wondering why there isn't one this year.

I don't have any reads to suggest, I'm having a terrible reading funk atm but sometimes people's suggestions can help with that.

Hmmm. Good point. I think it slipped my mind... :) I'll make one and post it.

I'm not going to make a thread for it until mid-March, but as an FYI to members not following the group read thread, there will be a group read for The Master & Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov over the month of April!

I've added a new What We Are Reading - this one for Short Stories, Anthologies, and Essays.

I've started my annual April Autism Awareness thread.

https://www.librarything.com/topic/220532

The thread is not meant to compete with any other monthly theme or group read for the month. It's just here for folks who want to share reading on the topic.

We're discussing group read over in the group read organization thread.

We've settled for The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco in May and are currently discussing summertime reads. If anyone is interested in any of the books mentioned on the thread so far, or if you have any new ideas, please feel free to head over and post.

The Magus has been suggested for June and The Name of the Wind for a summer long read (June-August) but nothing has been decided yet.

But this is interesting! Tor.com is starting a new ebook club, where you can download one free book a month and then they encourage discussion about it. The first book is The Three-Body Problem, which proves that procrastination pays off, as I've been intending to buy this 2015 Hugo winner for the last 10 months. Here's the website to sign up for free if you are interested.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Halloween thread is up. Instead of selecting specific titles this year, I've selected ten categories to choose from and have posted examples of books that could fit in them. The categories are broad and books may easily fit into multiple categories. As always, feel free to share with us what you are reading and to make suggestions for others.

Just read from Publisher Weekly that Megan Whalen Turner will have a new book in the Queen's Thief series coming out next May!! It's titled Thick as Thieves, so put that on your calendar, all you lovers of Eugenides.

Well its time. I thought it was too early, but I checked when I created last years thread and today's the day.

The thread for the 75 Group Christmas Swap is live. Come one, come all.

My list for this event can be found in the 75ers Christmas Exchange list.

Please no ebooks. Used are grand. And, of course, if you have a book you'd just really like me to read, and it's not on my wishlist, that's just grand as well.

Cheers!

Christmas Swap PSA....

Well Tis the Season, and there is a person among the group epitomizes that and wants to be a Super Secret Santa.

This person PM'd me wanted to find a way to make sure that anyone in the group who didn't feel they could participate due to financial hardships wouldn't be left out. They want to know who you are and want to make your Christmas special.

PM me with your information and I'll pass it along. No one but me and them will know who you are.

Merry Christmas!
