Hello, I've not read many westerns. I'm going to give some a shot. Can someone recommend some good authors for me to read?

(Please don't let this group go dormant!)

I don't know what you've read but in the past year I've just started reading some Zane Grey, which I've been enjoying. I really haven't read anything else in the genre apart from one book I vaguely remember as a kid.

Some of my favorite western authors include:
Louis L'Amour
Luke Short
Ernest Haycox
Wayne D. Overholser
Lewis Patten
L.P. Holmes
Clarence E. Mulford
Bradford Scott
B. M. Bowers
Elmer Kelton
Elmore Leonard

Another good place to start is the Western Writers of America list of the Best Westerns of the 20th Century: http://www.westernwriters.org/best_westerns.htm

Robert Parker and Craig Johnson (Longmire series) are two more you may want to read. The Longmire books are totally different from the TV series, so worth reading.
