Nicholas Basbanes is coming to Portland to speak.

Please feel free to join the Baxter Society in welcoming Nicholas Basbanes to Portland, Maine. Nicholas Basbanes, noted journalist and writer of some wonderful books on books will be presenting, "Adventures Among the Gently Mad." A modern A.E. Newton, Basbanes is writing what are and/or will become classics in biblio circles, with the likes of A Gentle Madness, Patience and Foritude, A Splendor of Letter and Every Book Has Its Reader. There will be books available for sale and he is willing to do some signing.

The Baxter Society is Maine's leading bibliophilic group, meeting monthly to hear presentations on a wide variety of bookish topices. Please see http://baxtersociety.org for more information.

The meeting will be Oct. 17th and will be held at USM's, Glickman Library. We hope to see you there.

And, councidentally, on 14-Nov, Simon Winchester (The Professor and the Madman) will be there! It makes me seriously consider moving out of Texas, even if it ~IS~ Winter then!

Scrambling to get the night off, but thanks so for the invitation. Also interesting to me that a google search for

basbanes portland baxter

leads to this very post (LT is #1, again) but

basbane portland baxter

brings you to a bunch of antiquarian booksellers.

Which just goes to show that the detail people get the worm - or something like that.

Thanks, Ijkahn, for the invitation - it was a wonderful lecture. What a treat - no power-point, no pre-packaged presentation - but an old fashioned conversation with a good story-teller.

(And, Tim, I didn't see you there, but Librarything was, indeed, mentioned).

What a nice group of people. Simon Winchester is next, yes? Terrific.
