I'm just curious. Have you guys seen/bought/read these classic novels w/ trendy covers from Penguin under the banner of "Penguin Red Classics" that are being sold at Powerbooks & Fullybooked? They're relatively cheap than other editions which is terrific for Pinoys on a budget. For instance, a Lolita book would normally range from P400-600, but the Penguin Red Classic edition sells for P215, P180 if on sale. Any comment is hugely appreciated.
latest find: new Tolstoy's War & Peace for P179 during the 3-day sale at Mall of Asia.

I've never actually bought one of those Penguin Red Classics, but it certainly is fantastic the way Penguin has been aggressively marketing their books lately (and these certainly look better than the even cheaper Penguin Popular Classics).
There's also the Penguin Classics Deluxe Editions and their Modern Classics, all very attractive volumes, though not as inexpensive as the ones julsitos2 has mentioned.

Those might be the Penguin Popular Classics, and they are indeed a good bargain.
Incidentally, I've always been curious if anyone bought their edition of Ghost Stories by M.R. James.
I love that author and was thrilled to see so many copies a few years ago. My thrill only increased when the copies disappeared, presumably because they were bought. But since no bookstore has ever re-stocked, now I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps this isn't exactly what happened...

I'll try to find Ghost Stories. Thanks.
The Penguin popular classics are a cheap source for good reads, but most of their selections are pre-1900. Some have archaic translations which makes reading a bit difficult. They're a treat when there's a sale!

M.R. James isn't for all tastes, admittedly, though he's certainly the master of the English ghost story, which combines quiet chills with a certain elegance, as odd as that may combination seems to be. I hope the both of you enjoy it as much as I do!

Penguin's covers are wonderful. The ones where they use paintings as cover art I find elegant, and the more contemporary designs are eye-catching and I think a wonderful way to market the books.
On the level of personal taste, I love how a lot of classic genre fiction has been released by Penguin: from Ian Fleming's James Bond novels to Lovecraft and M. R. James. My last Penguin purchase--not a "Red Classic"--is the stupendous American Supernatural Tales, again edited by S. T. Joshi.

i have Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. Someone also gave me a copy of Austen's Sense and Sensibility. This series makes you want to really (re-)read the classics.
eldritch00: the deluxe eds. are really great-looking! i already got a few copies to give away as xmas gifts.
maganda rin yung Twins series ng Vintage. i already got 2 "twins": Henry James's What Maisie Knew-Ian McEwan's Atonement and Henry Fielding's Tom Jones-Martin Amis's The Rachel Papers.
