A new catastrophe I'd never heard of is the St. Francis Dam failure in 1928 near Los Angeles in which 400 people died. There's a new book out reviewed in today's Wall St. Journal called Heavy Ground: William Mulholland and the St. Francis Dam Disaster by Norris Hundley Jr..

It looks good. I grabbed a copy l, but haven't had time to read it.
Remnants of the dam are still visible. Mulholland was quite the character. The movie Chinatown was based on the Los Angeles water wars, with John Huston's character supposedly representing Mulholland.
