A member suggested that we send a private profile message when an author photo you've uploaded get flagged. In theory I'm up for it, but I also want to check with members whenever we add another potentially annoying contact point. What do people think?

I think it's a good idea. I do try to leave a comment for people when I flag pics, but I am admittedly inconsistent about doing so. While those who have paid memberships can look at the quarantine pages to see the reason for flagging, they don't always do so, and people without paid memberships can't.

Sometimes, when an image is flagged, the person uploads it again, perhaps thinking there was just some error in the process.

So I think that a private message letting people know the reason for the flagging would help.

(It would also help if in large red letters we said "Being on a publicly accessible website does NOT mean a picture is in the public domain!" But that's a whole other issue.)

I also think it would be a good idea.

I've come across a few of the photos I've added or others added in the picture quarantine area that have been flagged because the flagger's author Joe Smith was not the Joe Smith pictured on a multi-author page. I've only seen a few when I look into the quarantine area, but it would be a pain if I missed some. I think someone who takes time to upload a photo should get notice if it is going to be taken down, especially since author photos rotate quickly out of the quarantine area.

And I don't see why it would be that much of an annoyance for people who receive the message. Only those that are repeatedly uploading photos that can't stay posted would get many notices. But if there were a way to make one notice per picture, not one notice per flag, that would probably be a lot less annoying.

Oh, I thought of another reason it would be helpful. Right now, if I leave a private comment for someone, there's no way for someone else to know I did that. As a result, multiple comments might be left, to the (justifiable) annoyance of the uploader. If it becomes site policy to automatically generate such a notice, then that's less likely to happen.

And I agree with christiguc that one notice per picture, rather than per flag, is best.

I really like the idea of consistent messaging when something is flagged.

2 ideas to assist:

1) Will the reason for flagging be taken from the flag comments? If so, please extend the characters we have to type the message. Otherwise some reasons will appear very curt when delivered in a message.

2) Can the message also include a standard url link to the LT copyright guidelines?.

eg ..has been flagged for publishiing on the author page with a comment of "...". For more information about LT image and copyright guidelines click here: (link).

Actually, Author pictures, flagging and use has evolved so much we probably need a wiki page too....

Well, there is, but it's not easy to find (I knew it was there, and it took a bit of searching to locate): http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Authors
