I think I might have earned 50 lashes with a paper bookmark. So can someone please help me?
I want to put the synopses of books (not reviews or opinions), provided by the publisher or bookseller, somewhere in the books' records on LT and have them visible on TC.
Since there isn't a place for this, I've been using the Summary field. (OK. I see you getting out your lashing bookmarks.) But this field doesn't show up on either LT or TC. ugh
The Comments field is being used to note inscriptions and other interesting bits and pieces, so I don't want to put synopses there.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Summary field can show up in LT if you include it in one of your views. It will also show up in Book Details. (http://www.librarything.com/work/7922893/details/129975938) You can use that for that if you wish, as it doesn't affect anyone else.
You should NOT copy the publisher's description into member description, but in most cases it should show up under description as those are pulled from Amazon. Obviously, that doesn't happen for older books without ISBN, like the book listed above.

>2 MarthaJeanne: Thanks, MarthaJeanne. It's beginning to make sense.
How do I fill in the "description" field? I can't find that on LT, even though there's such a field in TC.
https://www.librarycat.org/lib/VicRML/item/72402897 doesn't show what is in that book's LT entry https://www.librarything.com/work/7976969/book/72402897.

You don't. That is filled either from Amazon or libraries.
Since summary is not available in TinyCat, people would have to know to go to LT and then Book details.

>3 VicRML: There are Book Description and Library Description fields in LT at the bottom of the work page (unless you've rearranged the sections on that page). For the book you list these are both blank.

So, Summary is not a field that's viewable on TinyCat. Description can be shown on TinyCat Detail pages, but they only show the auto-generated Library Descriptions from LT, not the Amazon or Member Descriptions.
Example: https://www.librarything.com/work/36749/descriptions/116226415 and https://www.librarycat.org/lib/VicRML/item/116226415.
@VicRML: You can edit your (member) "Book description" by clicking on the "Descriptions" tab, from the book page: https://www.librarything.com/work/36749/descriptions/116226415. Unfortunately, the Comments/Local notes field is the only other option you have for adding your own description, as none of the other data fields are appropriate for that info on TinyCat.
I'll reach out to Tim about the possibility of adding the member description to Detail pages, and I'll let you know once I hear back (he's out of the office today)!

But Member description is not the place for publisher or bookseller descriptions.

That's not "your" book description, it's the book description for everyone on LT so it should only be edited in a way that conforms with LT standards, which in this case is as >7 MarthaJeanne: says.

Sorry, yes, that! Thanks for correcting me.

Thanks everyone. I look forward to hearing the next step. (It seems odd that an objective description is so challenging to find a home for.)

Has this issue been dealt with yet? I am trying to include the publisher description for books that don't automatically pull a description - I don't want to use the Local Notes field as it is used for other purposes.

>11 SHC_Library: We haven't changed what we offer for the "Description" field on TinyCat's Detail pages, yet, I'm afraid. I'll add your support for this to the list and we'll announce any changes on that front, but I cannot make any promises. I appreciate your patience in the meantime!

I also would like to be able to add my own descriptions to books that either do not have one or are unsatisfactory. Please encourage this additional option.

>13 yedlint: You can add a 'Member Description' already. It needs to be your own words, and not copied from somewhere else. It's in the description page. It probably does not show up in TinyCat.
