I used to like books by Ann Rinaldi. I haven't read any in quite a while, but she writes mostly historical fiction with girls or young women as the protagonists.

Thanks for the tip on Little House on the Prairie I am just getting into those books along with my cousin. I am on book 2 now of Julie, the new American Girl that just came out. I am hoping for either the Julie or Josefina doll for Christmas.

Caddie Woodlawn would be a good choice (19th-century Wisconsin), especially for anyone who likes Kirsten.
