Hilary said in her third email she was in trouble and only Ruth could help her. Any initial thoughts what this trouble was or why Ruth was the only person who could help her?

No. This had me stumped.

I assumed it must have something to do with Ruth's career but I couldn't see what.

I thought whatever it was must have something to do with archeology.

I thought it was odd of her to contact Ruth since it was almost as if Ruth couldn't even remember who she was. Why didn't she just call the police herself?

I think this is one case where you have to allow artistic licence.

Hilary was going to Walsingham for a conference and that's probably why she thought of Ruth because Ruth lives near there.
