Why do you think Tim wants a transfer? Are you surprised Nelson didn't try to talk him out of it?
2Sergeirocks
I think Tim's desire to leave the area is linked to his affair (ex-affair?) with Michelle.
I'm not surprised at Nelson's acceptance of the situation - he doesn't strike me as the touchy-feely type who will get bogged down in what makes others tick. Easy come, easy go.

Definitely linked to the affair but very surprised that Nelson didn't work harder to keep him on his team, after all he was the person who got him to come to Norfolk so must have identified him as a good officer.

I also think it's motivated by his relationship with Michelle. He might want to expand both his personal and career opportunities. I think Nelson knows he has a real future in police work.

I'm sure it's linked to his affair with Michelle. He needs to put distance between them to move on.
As for Nelson's reaction, if someone wants to go, one has to let them go.

I disagree to some extent as a school leader if I had an excellent member of staff who said they were looking at leaving I would discuss with them why they wanted to leave and if there was something we could do that would lead to them staying at the school. Staff retention is as vital as staff recruitment - especially of your best staff. I had a situation like this with a member of staff eighteen months ago and due to what we did that person was reinvigorated and is one of the most influential persons in the school.

You're right of course as well. I guess my reply comes from me already taking into account why I think he wants to go. There's nothing to be done internally to change that fact.

>6 Andrew-theQM: - I also agree that it's worthwhile to retain valuable employees. I think Sushi is right about us knowing some of the motivation around Tim's decision.

I think because Nelson was directly affected by the affair that he is handling Tim's wanting to leave differently than if there was no relationship with Nelson's wife. I can understand why he is not bending over backwards trying to make Tim stay.
10Andrew-theQM
I don't think Nelson knows about the affair so this wouldn't affect how Nelson handled Tim wanting to leave.
11EadieB
Probably so but I can't wonder that he wouldn't suspect all the time that Michelle has been working late.
12Andrew-theQM
But would he suspect Tim?
13EadieB
Tim was very vocal about what he thought about Michelle when he first met her. I don't remember if Nelson was around and heard Tim's comment. Tim doesn't have a girlfriend and he is supposedly very good looking and that would make me suspicious if I felt like my wife was possibly having an affair. Most people that are cheated on do have a gut feeling that something is wrong with their relationship. But usually the person dismisses the feeling when they should really pay attention to it.

I think Harry is rather dense at times and doesn't see what's staring him in the face. He doesn't suspect Michelle and Tim because it has never entered his mind that Michelle would even have an affair. Nothing thus far has happened but Tim is wanting to put distance between them and the transfer is his way of doing that and keeping Harry as a friend.
I agree with Andrew's point of view of talking to a valuable employee and seeing if you can help or fix their reason for wanting to leave...but anything other than the truth...which he's certainly is not going to tell Harry...would be a lie. You can't fix a lie.
