Did you understand Ruth's thoughts that 'she's willing to bet he (the writer) must be a Tolkien fan?

I thought this was just a reference to the old-fashioned style that the writer used in the letters.

Ruth believed that the writer was Tolkien fan because of the archaic syntax that the writer used.

I believe she came to the conclusion because of the style of writing and it was a humorous comment.
