Ruth thinks the babysitter (Clara) should tour the world, but doesn't tell her this because she is a good babysitter. Is this a selfish way to act?

Yes, but it's the kind of thing I'd expect from Ruth - she is rather self-centred.

Of course it is but that's Ruth. Maybe she'll encourage her more after Kate's old enough to take care of herself.

I would have to agree that Ruth is self-centered and not really interested in what's best for the sitter.
