Tim Waggoner's horror work?

Has anybody tried Tim Waggoner's Leisure horror titles? (Like Death, Pandora Drive or Darkness Wakes)

They sound good to me and the Amazon reviews are pretty good, but I don't know anybody who has read one of them.

Has anybody here read his books? Did you like them? Why or why not?

I have read all three Waggoner's novels and he is an amazing author. Unfortunately, I found out from Tim himself that Leisure decided not to renew his contract. You will not be seeing any more of Waggoner's novels from Leisure in the near future, unless somehow his contract is renewed.

I recommend that you begin with PANDORA DRIVE (his best to date in my opinion), followed by his most recent called DARKNESS WAKES. LIKE DEATH was also good for a debut, but I thought it fell short in comparison to the other two that followed.

You will like Tim Waggoner if you appreciate fantastical horror. He mixes quite a bit of fantasy with the horror, and heavy doses of sexual depictions. A friendly warning if you shy away from explicit sex scenes with your horror reading.

Explicit sex never bothers me. Especially in horror. I don't understand people that can read the most grisly and gruesome horror or crime stories, but then shy away from sexual activity. There is a potential thread there.

As for mixing fantasy... I don't know. It depends on how it's mixed I guess. I'm usually turned off by stuff termed 'dark fantasy'.

If the hero has super-powers, it isn't a horror story to me anymore.

I remember Stephen King in Danse Macabre mentioning that all horror boils down to I'm okay, you're okay... eek! What's that?! That definition works for me.

I know what you mean about disliking novels that take fantasy to the extreme when you are looking for a good horror book, Jseger9000.

Tim Waggoner does not go to such extremes as that. It is his ideas that are just over the top that can be portrayed as dark fantasy, but they are so horrific that will put a smile on the face of any serious horror fan. I wish I could explain to you his writing without giving examples and spoiling the story for you.

I know that liking/disliking a book can be very subjective, but I am going to go out on a limb here and recommend you PANDORA'S DRIVE. I was so incredibly amazed at both the literary content and the boundless imagination, that I read it in over a three day period. Tim Waggoner is incomparable to any other Leisure author that I have read. He will go to the extremes of Edward Lee and Jack Ketchum but from a very different angle. If you like extreme horror blended in with lots of sexual innuendos, you are in for lots of fun with Tim's stuff.

I've taken your advice and ordered Pandora Drive and Like Death. A seller on half.com had both at a good price and combined the shipping. I would have taken the plunge on Darkness Wakes if they had that as well.

The reviews on Amazon are great, but it's nice getting a review from this board, you know?

I'll get cracking on Pandora Drive once I finish the Emperor series (still a book and a half to go on that one).
