I am a fan of classic bird prints etc so this was a must have. I expected standard EP paper and the prints reproduced on the slick paper. The 7 volumes arrived perfectly packed in one very solid carton shipped direct from Kingsport Book. I was pleasantly surprised and feel the $199 per book price is a very reasonable. The paper is the thick embossed paper like on the Kelmscott books. The engravings are hand-tipped (full page inserted) and printed on matte flexible card stock. The quality of the binding is perfect. The print quality of the fonts and illustrations are much better than I was expecting. The only rough text would be some of the plate identifiers...though it gives it the look of the original. Of course it is a cheaper book than Folio's bird books. The portraits are colorful and well detailed.

>1 cu29640: Beautiful! I can't wait to receive mine. I also own the FS bird books--- they're fabulous.

I also bought FS Hertfordshire Pomona. I know what you're saying--pears and apples? But it's a beautiful, well-done book, especially if you love books of this genre.

Thank you for posting. I'm not really interested in this genre but I love these books. I'm now interested!

Curious how wordy is the set? I think the original (folio) Birds of America was just the prints. One reason I generally avoid books like the FS bird books is because while beautiful, I really don't need a huge book that is just art -although very beautiful art. If this has lots and lots of text, well, maybe I will give in... if I can figure out how to afford $1400 (hey, that's a lot of good food or a nice trip to Hawaii :)

ps Can someone tell me if there are nice but cheaper alternatives to the EP edition?

There are a lot of good words in this book. One can flip through quickly not seeing one illustration....although there are 500 of the beauties. The text paper feels as nice as the paper used in Folio's Birds of Paradise. The plates are printed on non-textured matte paper. I was pleasantly surprised.

I was just thinking about getting one of this set and wanted to check the photos that cu29640 posted. But the links are all dead. Is it possible that cu29640 can share the photos again, please?
