Bear and Bunny by Daniel Pinkwater
Tags: fiction, juvenile, picture book, animals, friendship, bears, rabbits, frogs, woods, checked out from work
Rating: 5/5
Pages: 40
Synopsis: The bear and the bunny are friends who like to wander in the woods, look for things to eat, sing songs, and talk things over. One day, the bunny asks the bear, "Why do we not have some kind of pet?" Well, the bear is not sure what a pet is. So the bunny explains that it’s an animal that you take care of and feed, and one that loves you. But a pinecone is not the right pet for a bear and a bunny. And a caterpillar is nice, but it may not be very much fun. After a much-needed nap in the forest, will these two find their perfect pet? Beloved author Daniel Pinkwater and masterful illustrator Will Hillenbrand return with another charming and humorous story starring the sweetest of friends, a bear and bunny.
Note(s): ❤'d the illustrations over the story. For some reason, the comment pets not being "as clever as we are" bothered me. Vegan bias, I guess. :P

Morris From America directed by Chad Hartigan
Tags: drama, humor, romance, coming of age, germany, dvd, checked out from work, R
Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: The romantic and coming-of-age misadventures of a 13-year-old American living in Germany.
Note(s): More of a coming-of-age drama than comedy. I felt bad for Morris regarding his unrequited love for Katrin; she was evil.

Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: An Oxford graduate takes up a job in a mental asylum, only to discover that the "revolutionary" new treatments are inhumane and that there is more going on than meets the eye.
Note(s): Recommended/watched with David. Great cast and lots of twists I wasn't expecting. Based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story, The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.

The Big Book of Submission: 69 Kinky Tales edited by Rachel Kramer-Bussel
Tags: erotica, anthology, short stories, bdsm, gay, lesbians, audiobook
Rating: 4/5
Pages: 364 pages (9 hours and 40 minutes)
Synopsis: Submission takes many forms in this collection of 69 short stories, from straining in bondage to taking a spanking, being put on display, and beyond. By turns bratty and worshipful, these submissives will go to great lengths to fulfill their naughtiest fantasies and are rewarded splendidly by their masters and mistresses. A student returns to show his former teacher who’s really in charge, a photo shoot becomes an opportunity for erotic games, and a man revels in his wife’s past as a former dominatrix. These brats, masochists, and hungry-for-sensation subs go above and beyond for the ones they adore, pushing themselves to new limits while their devious dominants put them through their paces. Edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel, these short stories sizzle with the tension of erotic power play, commands followed, and service willingly performed.
Note(s): I loved the variety! I usually hate audiobooks, but this was a free one via Audible/Amazon.com. I listened to it in two days at work; it was that good.

Daughter of Darkness by V. C. Andrews
Tags: fiction, horror, vampires, california, incest, series, kindred, audiobook, checked out from work
Rating: 4/5
Pages: 394 pages (10 hours and 33 minutes)
Synopsis: 17-year-old Lorelei Patio is the adopted daughter of a two-hundred-year-old vampire, Sergio Patio. Lorelei never fully realized who and what her father was, nor what her sisters were brought up to do for him. But one day, that all changed.
Note(s): A complete guilty pleasure. I'm not a huge fan of V. C. Andrews's newer ghostwritten stuff, but I wanted to read something horrorish, even if the vampires are understated here. Horror fans probably won't like this one, but devout V. C. Andrews fans might. Maybe. Another digital audiobook checked out/listened to at work, which lessens the enjoyability of the story ("Loreleiiiii!" *me dying, laughing*), but I'm trying to get my reading time in somehow.

Rating: 5/5
Pages: 32 pages
Synopsis: Celebrate Valentine’s Day—and love—with The Very Hungry Caterpillar with this brand-new title! “You are the cherry on my cake; you make the sun shine brighter; you make my heart flutter.” Using a range of images from the World of Eric Carle, and featuring the Very Hungry Caterpillar, this special gift book gives all the reasons why someone special makes the world a better and brighter place. Perfect for that someone special on Valentine’s Day—or any day.
Note(s): So cute and so appropriate for the month of love... and penicillin. :P I grew up on Eric Carle books, so I'm surprised I didn't read this one as soon as it came out. Recommended for younger readers for Valentine's Day.

Daughter of Light by V. C. Andrews
Tags: fiction, horror, vampires, massachusetts, incest, series, kindred, audiobook, checked out from work
Rating: 3/5
Pages: 384 pages (9 hours and 24 minutes)
Synopsis: A sequel to Daughter of Darkness finds Lorelei escaping from the vampire world of her early life and struggling to follow her heart and hide from the past in spite of terrifying nightmares and the constant threat of her powerful and vindictive father.
Note(s): Less exciting than Daughter of Darkness. Very little suspense. Lorelei came across as so arrogant; I disliked her. As far as I know, there are no more books in this series, thank god! Skippable.

From Twilight Till Dawn: Great Vampire Stories edited by Martin Greenberg
Tags: fiction, horror, short stories, anthology, vampires, vermont, europe, historical, audiobook, checked out from work
Rating: 4/5
Pages: 240* pages (4 hours and 29 minutes)
Synopsis: Are vampires a bloodthirsty menace to mankind? Or simply misunderstood creatures struggling to survive? After hearing these seven stories, you'll be able to decide for yourself. From the horrifying to the humorous, some of today's finest authors share stories about one of mankind's oldest imagined evils, the vampire. From F. Paul Wilson's** title story to Esther Friesner's comic tale of rival teens trying to best one another, these stories bring vampires to (un)life, in all their majesty and terror. Stories include "Bite-Me-Not or Fleur de Fur" by Tanith Lee, "Food Chain" by Nina Kiriki Hoffman, "Moonlight in Vermont" by Esther Friesner, "Madaleine" by Barbara Hambly, "Victims" by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and "Seat Partner" by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.
Note(s): I checked this one out mainly so I could re-read "Bite-Me-Not or Fleur de Fur" by Tanith Lee, which was the short story that propelled me in high school to read everything by her thereafter; plus I just love vampire stories. The other story I really enjoyed was "Moonlight in Vermont" by Esther Friesner, which was hands-down the funniest story. I'm eager to read more by her.
*This is an estimated page number. There is no book version of this title; only an audiobook. So I estimated 60 pages per hour, equaling 240 pages.
**There was no F. Paul Wilson story in the audiobook I listened to, nor a description for it on any of the sites I visited. *shrugs*

You by Caroline Kepnes
Tags: fiction, suspense, new york, series, you, audiobook, checked out from work
Rating: 5/5
Pages: 424 pages (11 hours and 6 minutes)
Synopsis: From debut author Caroline Kepnes comes You, one of Suspense Magazine's Best Books of 2014, and a brilliant and terrifying novel for the social media age. When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card. There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she'll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a "chance" meeting. As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck's life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck's perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder. A terrifying exploration of how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation, debut author Caroline Kepnes delivers a razor-sharp novel for our hyper-connected digital age. You is a compulsively readable page-turner that's being compared to Gone Girl, American Psycho, and Stephen King's Misery.
Note(s): I love the writing. When it arrived at work a couple years ago, I flipped through it, loved the first chapter, and bought a cheap copy later on. But during a move, I sold the book, so now I'm listening to it via Overdrive. This is one of those books that makes me love new books/authors. Very compelling and funny at times.

>25 Ape: Really, it's been around that long? You should definitely do it again. It'd be hilarious. And disturbing. Especially for "what makes you laugh?"

What makes me laugh: "On Stirring Seas of Salted Blood" by The Black Dahlia Murder. There you go. :P

O.o That's great! A real pop ballad. I've heard of the band, but not the song.

Book #8

Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler
Tags: fiction, horror, vampires, washington, california, audiobook, checked out from work
Rating: 3/5
Pages: 310* pages (12 hours and 19 minutes)
Synopsis: Shori is a mystery. Found alone in the woods, she appears to be a little black girl with traumatic amnesia and near-fatal wounds. But Shori is a fifty-three-year-old vampire with a ravenous hunger for blood, the lost child of an ancient species of near-immortals who live in dark symbiosis with humanity. Genetically modified to be able to walk in daylight, Shori now becomes the target of a vast plot to destroy her and her kind. And in the final apocalyptic battle, her survival will depend on whether all humans are bigots-or all bigots are human.
Note(s): A unique twist on vampires, but not as action-packed as I'd hoped. I tuned out after awhile. Some readers might be bothered by the underage sex, bordering on pedophilia.
*This book had to have been more than 310 pages, going by book #7 at 424 pages/11+ hours. Oh well. *shrugs*
