i think we are talking about a literary fight here. so let's go to novels (keep the genre straight): Hemingway has no contender. He keeps the belt.

As for Tolkien and Shakespeare, you are pairing two different divisions. (Playwright vs novelist, or fantasy novelist, if you will). Of course, Tolkien was also a primary Old English scholar, too, and is well known at the graduate level as a top authority on The Beowulf.

In poetry, it's Edgar Allen Poe vs Sylvia Plath. Can't see anyone else on the horizon there. Wait. Here comes a belated Emily Dickinson rising to meet their championships as time progresses!

Shakespeare covered so much more than Tolkien. Othello and The Merchant of Venice, just for a few examples, hit areas of the human experience that I don't see in Tolkien.

In a physical fight: well, I wouldn't back Will.

Depends on what you're comparing. I, personally, like Tolkein better...

as a 6 foot 300 pound male, i am here to tell you that hobbits are NOT harmless. they come up to me at a bar and challenge my heredity, then snap me in my jewels. i must then decide to swab the floor with their little hobbit pint of blood or let it go and be made fun of. i have had to demolish many hobbits and it has harmed my social life.
