Have you read any other books by Robert Bryndza, if so what is your opinion of them?
What are you hoping for from this book?

I haven't read any other book by him. I like his writing. A little crude in places but we've had bad language in other books too. Reading on the kindle allows me to access the meaning of some British words that I am not familiar with. I like learning the new words and am adding them to my notes.

I like the character of Erika Foster and learning about what happened to her husband Mark. Interesting with the class systems in Britain and Erika's Slovakian country. I hope we continue with this series as I found book 3 in Jamaica and I'm looking forward to reading book 2 also.

Never heard of this author before.
I wasn't hoping for anything in particular from the book, as I didn't think it would be my cup of tea (based on the cover) - not one I'd pick off the library shelf or secondhand book stall - but having read the first instalment, I'm pleasantly surprised...

Trackies - tracksuit

plummy - English upper class accent
road gritter - salt truck
Miserable old git - contemptible person

dossers - homeless
nick - police station
off-licence - liquor store
treacle - molasses
Andrea was meeting up for some sordid shag. (I have never used this word in this context.)
They took the overland train to London Bridge, and then the tube over to Chiswick. (Is the tube another train or a bus?) I just googled and found it to be the underground system.

This may give a good impression of miserable old gits 😂

Theresa May was in Philadelphia today at the GOP (Republicans) meeting. Trump was at the meeting too so I suppose they got together for their meeting there.

Probably, he does want them to pay for the wall. I think the president is just playing games with him. Trump is the deal-maker so we will have to watch and see what happens. He has done a lot in his first week.

The Philadelphia 'el' does travel above the streets but when it get to downtown Philly in goes underground and turns up Market Street towards the city hall.

I've not read this author before and had no expectations going in.

>5 EadieB: Some new word for me too. When I read the sentence with "off license", I thought my kindle version was missing a word. Off license_____ (gambling joint, bar...???). LOL. I LOVE road gritter! I figured out what it meant by the context and think we should use that term here in the US too.

I know the British terms do make more sense at times. It's all a matter of what you're used to.

>23 EadieB: Since I'm in Southern California where it never snows, I'm not used to hearing much about snow shoveling, de-icing, etc.
Although I must say it was quite exciting earlier this week. We had a wild storm (for us) and there were actually small hail stones all over my neighborhood....for a brief time. : ) Very exciting!

That must have been unique for your area! My friends were trying to get out of Prince Edward Island and meet us in Jamaica on January 7. They were going to get a 30 inch snow storm that day and it was just starting and their plane had to be de-iced. The de-icing truck did the first side of the plane and then went around to the other side and slid on black ice and took the wing off the plane and they were grounded. They had a connecting flight in Toronto which would take them to Jamaica but they missed it. They did get to Jamaica the next day but was not too happy that they missed a day which they did get to make up by staying an extra day at the end of the week. Never heard of a de-icing truck grounding a plane.

>25 EadieB:. I never considered the hazards of de-icing a plane. I hope that poor driver had auto insurance! : )
How frustrating it must have been for your friends to have the long delay! I'm glad they were able to get back their lost day and extend their trip!

>27 bluebird_:
It was a big disappointment for them but all turned out well in the end. I suppose it will be a big bill for the de-icing company to repair the plane. Hope the driver didn't lose his job too.
