Have you read any James Oswald books before?
What are you hoping for from this book or this series?

New one for me. from what I have read thus far he's an easy author to read. Not sure yet about the Inspector McLean character but he seems to be okay thus far. Just hope to have a good time with a good group of friends.

I suggested the book because I thought it looked good. I was babysitting this morning so I'm starting the book right now. Hope it's a good one since we really need a good one.

Here's the answer I got from the Girl In the Ice author Robert Bryndza:

in response to eadieburke:

I’m in a book discussion of The Girl in the Ice. Was Erika drugged from the envelope that the killer put in her pocket or did she just pass out front the stress of the press conference where she grabbed the microphone from Marsh?

Thank you Eadie, it was a migraine triggered by her Post Traumatic Stress

Interesting sideline here. In the acknowledgements he says "This book has been a long time in writing, but it wouldn't have been written at all if it weren't for Stuart McBride. It was his suggestion that I stop writing fantasy and instead, try my hand at crime fiction, so in many ways it's all his fault. Thanks Stuart!"

So...if we don't like the book can we blame Stuart McBride? :) I also just found that the green-horn young, detective is....Stuart McBride.

I've never read anything by this author but it looks interesting.

The back of my book said something about "Edinburgh Detective Inspector Tony McLean" and I said to myself, "maybe he knows Stuart MacBride."

I'm hoping to find a new Detective with good stories to back him up, with enough information to allow us get involved. Hopefully doesn't present too depressive a view of Edinburgh like Stuart Macbride did of Aberdeen.

>6 EadieB: He's just met him in mine. He could have given Stuart McBride a higher rank:)

>7 Andrew-theQM: I don't think the Tourist board is going to be very happy with Mr. Oswald either:)

Although couldn't believe how hot he kept saying it was, like a furnace! In Edinburgh....really! Certainly never been like that when I've been to Edinburgh, warm in the middle of Summer but a real rarity to need air conditioning surely.

Possibly Edinburgh is not a very nice place as Ian Rankin doesn't help the situation either.

>9 Andrew-theQM: I thought the description of the incident room was down right depressing. They said it was scorching outside but the heat was on in the room they were in and they had no chairs...had to send Stuart MacBride to find some. The description of MacLean's flat was also fairly depressing.

>10 EadieB: Edinburgh is older than God but there are some really nice parts. I think these writers look for the worse things they can find. Like all old cities I'm sure there are parts that do look like they describe them but really...everywhere???

>10 EadieB: >12 Carol420: I love Edinburgh, it has quite a cosmopolitan feel in places. Very prosperous city, I think Ian Rankin might be upset if he left you feeling Edinburgh was not a nice place as he is very passionate about Edinburgh and Scotland. Like all major cities it is not without some problems in places but has a much better feel than Glasgow with it's much more deep rooted issues. I would happily live in Edinburgh. I love going there every year. Even better it has some sea and some city life, the ideal combination.

>10 EadieB: >12 Carol420: Like all authors they tend to describe the seedier part of life, but notice at the beginning of the book they were talking about a prosperous part of the city where the old money was.

Sounds nice but these authors shouldn't focus on the bad all the time.

>11 Carol420: >9 Andrew-theQM: Just checked average temperature in July and August, the hottest months, is 19 degrees Celsius / centigrade, which equates to 66 degrees Fahrenheit. They were talking about the outside temperatures too, but this may have been a hot period for a Scot. It may be relative.

>15 EadieB: I think is why they refer to the genre as Scottish Noir, as it tends to focus on the seedier and darker aspect. I must be honest I have always felt safe in Scotland.

This gives a different perspective:

This is a good video for Edinburgh.

They are just building a new Forth Road Bridge, that I think opens later this year. Been building it for a few years and seen it progress as we have passed on the old road bridge each Summer.

This is the new road bridge (Queensferry Crossing). I wonder how long before someone gets it into a book!

My husband just got 34 pictures from the fire chief of York and his family who visited Edinburgh yesterday. We know him from Jamaica. He always goes the same week we do. He hasn't seen the video yet but I'll let you know what he says after he sees that. I know he'll like the part about making your own Scotch blend.

I'm disappointed that after reading the first section there has been no bacon buttie appearances.

I loved my two visits to Scotland and would like to go back sometime.

Haven't read this author yet, but am hoping for a new series to add to my constantly growing pile of TBR books. So far so good, I'm about halfway through the first section.

I love Edinburgh - and it's been ages since I visited. I really only know the city with good weather - except for that visit in November...

I've not read any books by James Oswald yet. So looking forward to a new discovery and a mental visit to a place I love.
